She’s Out of My League…or is she?

They say it can only happen in the movies. It’s not entirely proven in real life, but in reel life, a geeky wanna-be seems to have just as good as a chance as the hot, young hunk, as we can count numerous examples of the nerds who eventually gets the girl in the end.

Released this past March and coming to Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Paramount Home Video June 22nd, She’s Out of My League is another great example of the geeky guy (here, Jay Baruchel) who gets the beautiful girl (Alice Eve). The tag-line is pretty brilliant for this sex comedy: How can a 10, go for a 5? Killer Film looks back at other sex comedies where the 5 (or sometimes less) got the 10 in She’s Out of My League…or is she?

The most obvious example is in American Pie where hapless goof Jim (Jason Briggs) winds up with Czechoslovakian Nadia (the gorgeous Shannon Elizabeth). Trust us, she’s a 10, yet even with web cams and his overly-curious father, Jim gets the babe by the end of the film. Let’s look at the facts of why Jim is a 5 or less: he’s a virgin that explains a lot of his horny actions like masturbation and missionary pie sex antics, yet he’s impossible when it comes to conversation with women. And let’s not forget about his little strip tease for Nadia. Yep, Jim’s helpless, yet he got the girl. Lucky guy. Lets not forget too, Jim got with band camp loving Michelle (Alyson Hannigan).

Perhaps the most perfect example of this is in Knocked Up. Just look at the tag-line and that poster!

If this guy, (sorry Seth Rogen) got with Katherine Heigl, then by goodness, we all stand a chance. That’s what makes most of the comedy work in this Apatow film. He’s constantly playing with the goofy guy who gets the girl, like in 40 Year Old Virgin. Maybe because Apatow himself was that 5-rated guy growing up, who got the 10 in Leslie Mann, but let’s not hate and instead congratulate. Sadly, I don’t think we at Killer Film would endorse Rogen’s character of Ben and his method of getting with Heigl’s character of Alison by boozing her up, but hey, it worked for him, and he grabbed his chance (at first, like all 5′s, reluctantly) and made it work.

I don’t think we have to say much of the mother of all 5′s-who-get-the-girls in Superbad, do we? Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all should-be-forever-virgins, but they get the babes in Emma Stone and Martha MacIsaac. It’s in! Gotta love these guys undying determination to overcome their 5 status. But outside of these overly determined youngsters, a big king of all 5′s is Benjamin Braddock. Sure, a younger Dustin Hoffman was no “McLovin’” but an intelligent nerd, who not only gets seduced by a mature, hot, older woman (and we all know what that means), he’s also caught up in a love triangle between Mrs. Robinson and Elaine, her daughter! Pimp of the Year in 1967, no doubt, huh? The Graduate is a perfect movie, and not only for his average stature that gets or got the ladies, but it makes it a unique film in this discussion.

We still got DJ Qualls in The New Guy, who gets the perfect 10 in Eliza Dushku, the political-minded nerd Mathew who gets Danielle in The Girl Next Door, Euegen Bell in Miss March who is clearly a 5 or less and his ex-girlfriend is now a Playboy Playmate, Bender, the wild child nobody likes, who gets the popular hot girl in Claire at the end in The Breakfast Club, and many more that all prove one thing: when a 5 gets a 10, it can only happen in the movies.

  1. Heigl is like an 11 LOL and Rogen about a 3. Its gotta be the biggest divide ever LOL.

  2. Adam Sandler being married to Selma Hayek in GROWN-UPS comes to mind. And Kevin James with Maria Bello in the same movie. Kevin James (once again) with Leah Remini in KING OF QUEENS.

  3. Another great article Jon! Great choice of movies to prove your point of 5′s getting 10′s.

^Brad: I totally agree with you on Kevin James and Leah Remini. Strange combination but it works for the show.

It really did. I know there is a lot of Kevin James hate going on now for being too “Chris Farley” in GROWN-UP (whatever the hell that means), but that was one funny show.

  4. How about Sam Witwicky and Mikaela in ‘Transformers’? Of course, the film wasn’t about that, but it was still a good example of the geek getting the hot girl.

Seriously, how did silly Shia get Megan?!

    Brad Reiter Reply:

Considering she’s overrated, lokos wise, and not all there mentally, it’s not hard. I mean she’s been with Brian Austin Green for a bunch of years, so it’s not hard to imagine a character of hers would go for an averge looking guy.

  5. lol when i read the title I thought of you and Christina lololoolololll god I am so funny.. but seriously … that’s what i thought… lol
