September Movie Preview

The Summer Movie Season might be over. School has started back up. Football is on Saturdays/Sundays. Leaves in some areas of the country might be turning. Fall is around the corner. Ah.

But to be perfectly honest, another month another big heap of movies coming out in theaters, but your time is limited. Between school, work, and football, you want to see a damn good movie, because you can not waste your time this month, and Killer Film is here to help. With Editor-in-Chief Donny Broussard and Senior Writer Jon Peters, they take a look at this month’s releases and give you the little low-down on what they think, as well as, a ‘see it’ or ‘skip it’ recommendation.

(September 2nd)

Shark Night 3D

The IMDb plot: “A weekend at a lake house in the Louisiana Gulf turns into a nightmare for seven vacationers as they are subjected to fresh-water shark attacks.”

3D option? Yes.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: Coming from the director of Snake on a Plane, the movie that desperately wanted to be the cult classic it isn’t, Shark Night 3D is the first of what will be many killer shark movies being released over the next six months. It looks slick and fun, something Snakes was not, but in the end, the trailer teases shark attacks, gore, and boobs, but alas, it’s PG-13. This should’ve been the killer film Piranha 3D wished it was, but the PG-13 neuters that potential. And still….after a lackluster month that was August, I’m ready for some fun again. See it.

Donny: Hot girls in bikinis, shit-loads of killer sharks. I’m totally going to catch this one in the theatre. A little weary of the PG-13 rating, but I’ll reserve my comments on that until after I see it.

Apollo 18

The IMDb plot: “Decades-old found footage from NASA’s abandoned Apollo 18 mission, where two American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: I HATE  the “found footage” genre, but with that said, this looks like it could be fun. So I’m going to let Jon see it and if he digs it I’ll rent it later. Skip it.

Jon: We all know Donny’s legendary stance on the “found footage” genre, and at times, he’s right. I dig the genre, and this is one of the cooler concepts around. Using “old” NASA footage on the final trip to the Moon and what really happened as to why we never went back, has me hooked. Let’s hope it’s as scary as it promises. See it.

The Debt

The IMDb plot: “In 1965, Mossad agent Rachel Singer was part of a secret mission to capture and bring to trial the Surgeon of Birkenau, a Nazi war criminal. In her present-day life, when a man claiming to be the killer surfaces in Ukraine, Singer travels to Eastern Europe to seek out the truth.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: This looks like a solid little thriller. Good cast. But personally, I’m not digging it. I just get this feeling that it’ll serve better as a Friday night rental, than a theatrical experience. Maybe I’m suffering from post-summer movie season withdraws, but it’s a no-go for me: Skip it.

Donny: I’m with Jon on this one. It looks like it will be a solid flick, but for some reason I just don’t have the drive to check it out in the theatre. Skip it.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy

The IMDb plot: “A group of 30-year-olds who have been friends since high school attempt to throw an end-of-summer orgy.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: Unlike Jon I still enjoy sex and comedies, so I’m gonna see it.

Jon: I’m tired of R-rated comedies now. It’s all dirty sex jokes or potty humor. There’s nothing original in these anymore, orgies included, so blah. Skip it.

(September 9th)

Contagion

The IMDb plot: “An action-thriller centered on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: It’s our great fear: an airborne virus that could not only eradicate a country, but humanity. The trailer and the cast should really get most passed the similarities to Outbreak or The Crazies. Hell, who am I kidding? It’s Outbreak directed by Steven Soderbergh…freakin’ sold. See it.

Donny: Even though this looks like a few movies I’ve seen before I’m never disappointed by Steven Soderbergh or for that matter Matt Damon. See it.

Warrior

The IMDb plot: “Ex-Marine Tommy Riordan returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh to train for a mixed martial arts tournament with a major cast prize. Looking to his father, an alcoholic former coach, for guidance is tough enough, but Tommy’s chosen path also is putting him on a collision course with his older brother, Brendan, a former MMA and current struggling parent.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: I want to see this flick so bad I can feel it in my balls. Just saying. I don’t really care for MMA, but this looks like a solid picture with a solid cast. Sold. See it.

Jon: No Fall film has me more excited to see it than Warrior. Gavin O’Connor’s Pride & Glory was criminally underrated a few years back and this looks like a Rocky. I’m a fight fan, but haven’t warmed up to the MMA/UFC world yet, but it matters not. Hardy owns, as does this MMA version of The Fighter. See it thrice!

Creature

The IMDb plot: “In the back country of Louisiana, a group of friends unearth a terrible secret that unleashes a monster from the depths of the swamp.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: A little film that could. Tired of CG monsters? Disappointed by this year’s Dylan Dog? Try Creature. For late night monster lovers only. See it.

Donny: I’m actually excited for this indie creature feature. A monster that isn’t CG, I’m there. See it.

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star

The IMDb plot: A kid from the Midwest moves out to Hollywood in order to follow in his parents footsteps — and become a porn star.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: I dig Swardson’s comedy, and this looks like it could be fun. See it.

Jon: Skip it.

(September 16th)

Straw Dogs

The IMDb plot: “L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: It’s been delayed for seemingly ever, which is never really a good sign, but after seeing the trailer, hey it doesn’t look to bad. The newer trailers are invoking a little Last House on the Left vibe, which I’m not digging. Will this remake add anything new to the classic film, no. Does it mean it’ll be ass, no. See it.

Donny: I absolutely love the original Straw Dogs, so I’m not really stoked to see this remake. I’m going to stick to my guns and stop seeing remakes in the theatre. Skip it.

Drive

The IMDb plot: “A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: This is the movie I am most excited about in September. It’s a pretty original premise and I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. See it.

Jon: I’m hearing superb things, yet I know little about the film. I’m with Donny: this looks original, interesting, and should be what the hype suggests. See it.

The Lion King 3D

The IMDb plot: “Tricked into thinking he killed his father, a guilt ridden lion cub flees into exile and abandons his identity as the future King.”

3D option? Yes.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: I absolutely love The Lion King. After seeing the step-by-step process of how Disney made this classic a 3D film, it looks impressive. See the film if you’re bored this weekend, but remember the spiffy Blu-ray is coming a few weeks later in early October. See it.

Donny: I’m hoping my kids don’t see the preview for this or the poster in our local theatre, because I am hoping to skip it.

(September 23rd)

The Killer Elite

The IMDb plot: “When his mentor is taken captive, a retired member of Britain’s Elite Special Air Service is forced into action. His mission: kill three assassins dispatched by their cunning leader.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: Can’t go wrong with Statham and Owen. Add DeNiro to the mix and call it a classic. See it.

Jon: What! Statham vs. Owen, with some tag team help by Bobby D? Hell yeah, motherf*cker! Statham is in a movie every other month it seems, yet each project is just as old school ass-kicking as the last. As we wait for The Expendables 2…See it.

Abduction

The IMDb plot: “A thriller centered on a young man who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: With a good supporting cast, the only thing that will hurt this film is if non-Twilight fans can buy him as an action star. Seeing the trailer, he looks a little off. His baby face, his baby voice, just doesn’t cut it for us hardcore action fans. Plus, Singleton has fallen off as a director. Skip it.

Donny: I can’t stand the Twilight films, but the trailer for this flick paints a picture of a solid flick. I’m gonna give babyface a chance and see it.

Moneyball

The IMDb plot: “The story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: I am a sucker for sports flicks. Pitt is a great actor and this looks like a solid movie. See it.

Jon: I can only handle one inspirational sports film a month, and it’s Warrior for me. Now, that being said, this looks good. Remember when Soderbergh was going to direct this? It might have his imprint on it, Pitt looks good, I love baseball, but eh. I say wait to you have a little spare cash or are super bored. Skip it.

(September 30th)

Dream House

The IMDb plot: “Soon after moving into their seemingly idyllic new home, a family learns of a brutal crime committed against former residents of the dwelling.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: The Shining much, or much to much? It’s hard to get behind another film about someone who’s losing his damn mind like Nicholson in Kubrick’s masterpiece or like Depp in Secret Window. Great cast, though, as I really like Daniel Craig. I think the trailer shows off way too much to keep the mystery. Skip it.

Donny: I’m over spooky children. Skip it.

50/50

The IMDb plot: “A comedic account of a 27-year-old guy’s cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Donny: Love the cast, and the trailer was fun. Rogen is my favorite new comedian, and  Joseph Gordon-Levitt is always stellar. See it.

Jon: Can cancer be funny? Why so serious? Looks decent. Good cast, good director, but haven’t seen much to jazz me yet. It’s probably a marketing team’s nightmare: a comedy about a cancer victim and his friend, Seth Rogen. Skip it.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

The IMDb plot: “Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: After hearing so much about this horror/comedy, I’m kind of overly eager to see it. With Magnet Releasing behind it, I’m even more excited. Will it be a new Shaun of the Dead, no, but I’ll take a new Evil Dead though. See it.

Donny: Can’t wait to see this flick! I’ve been waiting on this baby to hit DVD or the theatre for almost a year now. Sold. See it.

September Spotlight

Take Shelter

The IMDb plot: “Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself.”

3D option? No.

Watch the trailer here!

Jon: A dark, mysterious film about a man seeing visions of our upcoming End of Times. I love how they’re playing it as if he’s right, everyone’s wrong. Should be eerie and thoughtful. Hands down, looks amazing. See it.

Donny: Looks boring. Skip it.

As usual, keep it here to the genre site of awesome, as we will cover all of these movies and more, all September long! What are you seeing or skipping this month? Let us know below!

Donny Broussard

I enjoy the types of films that used to dominate late night television in the '80s, spending time with my family, filmmaking, photography, Rubik's Cubes, Diet Pepsi, building old Shogun Warriors model kits, Canon cameras, comic books, AOR, coconut ice cream, mac & cheese, cold pizza, popcorn, nachos, UL Football tailgating, film festivals, reading, Barry Manilow (don't ask), films with both Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase in them, Alf, Pac Man, 1979 Trans AMs, beer, Godzilla, Hooters (both the restaurant and ones girls like to keep hidden), and Bigfoot (he's real). I'm just saying.

  1. This is one of the busiest months, movie wise. I’m going to be seeing most of these for sure! And I’ve already seen one of them, and it was great.

  2. I think I’ll be saving my money for all the great BD releases: X:FC, Thor, and Gamera 3…..oh my.

  3. Lautner seems like a nice young man, but picturing him as a action star is a bit of a stretch for me. He’s appears to be physically fit enough for the genre. But selling the bad assery is another story.

Then again, I LOL @ the thought of Liam Neeson kicking butt in Taken.

    Look how that worked out.

    So good luck Wolf Boy.

  4. TUCKER AND DALE VS. EVIL is a great splatter comedy!

    Brad Reiter Reply:

    Couldn’t agree more!

  5. Drive and Warrior are my most anticipated!
