Race to Witch Mountain – Review

Submitted by Donny Broussard on March 17, 2009 – 7:17 amNo Comment

racetoI was a big fan of the Witch Mountain series as a kid, so I wasn’t really looking forward to checking out this reboot.  But my kid really wanted to see it, and I figured that popcorn and a bad movie is better than no popcorn at all.  Only I was surprised to find myself enjoying the flick as well as the popcorn.

The story is pretty similar to the one used in the previous films.  Two mysterious children with superpowers (the secret is that the kids are actually aliens) enlist the help of a cab driver (Dwayne Johnson) and a smoking hot UFO expert (Carla Gugino) in order to complete their mission which of course could save the entire world.  The government is after them because it’s their job to chop up little green men, even if said green men look like 15 year old children, and this time around an evil alien hit man is after them as well.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was pretty good as the down on his luck cab driver that is having problems with the mob, and of course Carla Gugino was stupid hot.  The kids were pretty decent as well, and the ship looked retro-cool.  Sure the plot was simple, and family friendly, but it was still a fun flick.  Also, the original kids, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann made cameo appearances in the movie (I sorta geeked out when I saw them).

I’m not gonna spend loads of time trying to delve deep into the subtexts of the flick, but am going to say that if your a fan of the original movies, then this one will probably make you smile a little.  It’s not the best movie ever made, but it is a solid family flick, so I’d say that Race to Witch Mountain is a killer film.
