Outlander Review

outlander1When I first heard about Outlander, my inner-geek started to get excited.  A spaceman landing on Earth during the reign of the Vikings sounded like an awesome idea to me.  Then I heard that James Caviezel, Ron Perlman, and John Hurt were in it and I marked the release date on my calendar.

The year is 709 AD, and a Kainan’s (Caviezel) space ship has crash-landed on Earth.  Only, what he didn’t know was that a beast who’s home his people ravaged stowed away on his ship.  This beast, which Kainan calls a Moorwen is basically an angry eating machine that can eat it’s way through a Viking village in a matter of minutes.  While hunting the Moorwen Kainan is captured by a group of Vikings that think he might have had something to do with the recent destruction of a neighboring village. It doesn’t take long for the Vikings and their King-in-training Wulfric (Jack Hutson) to realize that the spaceman is telling the truth about the creature, and that they need to do everything they can to kill the monster.  And of course it doesn’t take long for Kainan to fall in love with the stupid hot Viking Queen, Freya (Sophia Myles).

Call me a pushover, but I love fantasy films, and I love science fiction just as much.  So the pairing of these two genres in this flick was like a Double-Dutch ice-cream washed down with a glass of Jack Daniels, mmm mmm good.  Caviezel is an awesome actor and he rocked this role as the tortured spaceman with a boner for a Viking Queen.  The production design was fantastic, and the monster was pretty darn cool as well.  My only complaint is the Ron Perlman, who plays Gunnar in the flick didn’t get enough screen time.

This isn’t the best flick ever made, but it is a good time at the movies.  So if you happen to live in a city where this flick is playing I’d suggest checking it out because it is a killer film.
