Donny’s best and worst of 2011

2011 has been one hell of a year. I’ve seen lots of great films as well as a bunch of stinkers, and as the year comes to an end it’s time for my best and worst list. This year I’m going to list my top 30 and bottom 10. So read on below to see what I enjoyed and what I don’t care to see again. Have a happy new year!

MY TOP 30

30. Dylan Dog

I know I’m gonna get some flack for having this one on my list, but I really don’g give a shit. I had a blast with this movie. I enjoyed the late night cable feel of the film, the quirky characters, and the lush New Orleans setting.

29. Drive Angry

This movie was so much fun. From beginning to end it kept me entertained. The cars, the gun fights, the boobs, and one hell of a villain make this one perfect for pizza night.

28. Red State

Kevin Smith proved that he had the goods to helm a flick that wasn’t all dick and fart jokes, and he did it with style.

27. Chillerama

Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Adam Rifkin, and Tim Sullivan kicked out a late night classic for the new millennium. Filled with bodily fluids and zany characters, Chillerama kept a smile on my face that stayed with me long after leaving the theatre.

26. Tucker & Dale vs Evil

I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a horror comedy this much. Solid laughs, fun gore, and two unforgettable characters.

25. Captain America: The First Avenger

I wasn’t expecting to dig this one as much as I did. It really is an amazing portrayal of a legendary American hero. I can’t wait for The Avengers.

24. 50/50

Can cancer be funny? Yes, yes it can.

23. Take Me Home Tonight

Finally someone took what John Hughes did in the ‘80s and make it work for today.

22. The Devil’s Double

This is one bad-ass mother F$#king movie that should win awards hand over foot, but the academy only picks boring artsy pictures. Tune into the Killies in February where I’m sure it’ll get the love it deserves.

21. Midnight in Paris

Woody is back! Enough said.

20. The Rum Diary

Hunter S. Thompson done right. Depp is perfect for this role, and he pulled it off with style.

19. X

A slick, sexy, Australian thriller that keeps the adrenalin pumping.

18. Hesher

Wow, just wow. If you haven’t seen it, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

17. Real Steel

Rock Em Sock Em Robots is what I expected, but I got so much more. This is a movie with heart that isn’t afraid to have fun.

16. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

I’m a huge fan of the books, and of the movies. This entry in the series kicked much ass, and is a fitting end to a wonderful franchise.

15. Paul

I can’t get enough of this flick. I know most critics didn’t dig it, but I thought it brought the funny and introduced the world to one of the coolest aliens to ever grace the silver screen.

14. Attack The Block

Superbly written characters, killer creatures, stunning visual effects, and an amazing soundtrack. What’s not to like?

13. Hall Pass

Move over Hangover 2, because this flick just kicked the shit out of you.

12. Thor

I had a blast with this film. It remined me of the old Christopher Reeve Superman films. It doesn’t take itself to seriously, but still packs a punch.

11. X-Men: First Class

One of the best superhero movies ever made. I knew Matthew Vaughn would rock it, but I had no idea he’d knock it out of the park like he did.

10. 30 Minutes or Less

Ruben Fleischer knows how to craft a comedy.

9. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

This was a surprise for me. I expected it to be solid, but I didn’t expect it to be great.

8. Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

The best summer blockbuster released this winter.

7. Hanna

An action thriller done the right way.

6. Warrior

This flick took the spirit of Rocky and added even more heart and soul to it. One of the best sports movies I’ve ever seen.

5. The Muppets

The Muppets are back and the are awesome! Just saying.

4.  Super 8

For the first time in years I felt like I was a kid again. This movie tool me back to the glory days when films were magical.

3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Fincher knows how to make a great movie, and in this case he knows how to turn a book into a great movie.

2. Bellflower

I wish I could have seen this one in the theatre. By far of of the most inventive and fresh independent films I have seen in a very long time.

1. Drive

I don’t think there’s any doubt that this is the best film to hit screens this year. Pitch perfect. Five well deserved stars and positively a killer film!

MY BOTTOM 10

10. Green Lantern

Why is it necessary to put Ryan Reynolds’ floating head on a CGI suit? It’s not. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this action stinker. If I wanna play a video game I’ll bust out the Playstation.

9.  Shark Night 3D

If your gonna put out a summer shark movie, then give me some tits, and buckets, and buckets of blood. This was a huge disappointment.

8. Season of the Witch

The only thing this film is good for is being used as a drinking game.

7. Straw Dogs

Just a weak retelling of the original classic.

6. No Strings Attached

Weak. A sex comedy with no nudity and flat characters.

5. Sucker Punch

A really beautiful film that if filled with beautiful women that never really goes anywhere.

4. Zookeeper

Really, did this movie need to be made? I think not.

3. A Serbian Film

Such a huge pile of smoldering shit.

2. The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence)

Pointless crap.

1. Jack and Jill

Come on Sandler, I know you’ve got the awesome in you, so bring it back and stop making drivel like this.

Donny Broussard

I enjoy the types of films that used to dominate late night television in the '80s, spending time with my family, filmmaking, photography, Rubik's Cubes, Diet Pepsi, building old Shogun Warriors model kits, Canon cameras, comic books, AOR, coconut ice cream, mac & cheese, cold pizza, popcorn, nachos, UL Football tailgating, film festivals, reading, Barry Manilow (don't ask), films with both Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase in them, Alf, Pac Man, 1979 Trans AMs, beer, Godzilla, Hooters (both the restaurant and ones girls like to keep hidden), and Bigfoot (he's real). I'm just saying.

  1. Great list, sir. I can certainly agree with many of the movies on your top 30 list. I’m happy I’m not the only one to enjoy DRIVE ANGRY.
