Crank: High Voltage – Review
I love flicks that don’t take themselves seriously. The first Crank was like a rush of blood to the head, but in that tongue in cheek way that allows an action movie to be more than just an action movie. It crosses the line between action packed thrill ride and dark comedy. Crank: High Voltage takes that formula and injects it with enough ass kickery to fuel three action movies.
High Voltage picks up right where Crank left off, with Chelios (Jason Statham) bouncing on concrete after falling our of a helicopter. He is scraped off the road by a group of gang scum and brought to a makeshift operating room. He watches in disbelief as an artificial heart is put into his body. When Chelios wakes up he’s pissed off and wants his heart back. So begins a citywide search for his ticker, and chaos and mayhem ensue.
I’m a huge fan of Statham’s flicks, and the Crank movies are among my favorites. The moment Chelios starts kicking ass I knew High Voltage was going to be an adrenaline rush of awesome. This time around Chev Chelios is even more pissed off than he was before and all of the best characters from the first flick are back and in rare form as well. Eve (Amy Smart) is hot as hell and kicking much ass in between public displays of affection with Chelios. Doc Miles (Dwight Yoakam)is busy trying to track down the missing heart and slapping hot black bootie, while Kaylo’s twin brother Venus (Efren Ramirez) is working hard to avenge his death. Hell yeah! Even Cory Haim kicked some ass in this flick as Randy the strip club manager with a mullet.
Overall the action level is moved up more than a few notches and Statham is like an unstoppable force of nature. The flicks directors need to be commended as well for taking chances visually. These gents made a film that kicks the shit out of anyone willing to watch it. Crank: High Voltage was most definitely a killer film.
