Actor Devon Bostick talks Sacrifice with Cuba Gooding and the delayed Hidden 3D
Coming to Blu-ray and DVD April 26th from Millennium Media is Sacrifice, a gritty crime drama starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., Christian Slater, and Devon Bostick. A tough undercover cop inadvertently gets involved in a dangerous heroin ring when a young defector of the drug trade leaves his five year-old sister in his care.
Genre fans might recall the young actor from such films as George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead and Saw VI, and today Devon Bostick takes a few minutes to talk with Killer Film about Sacrifice, after coming off of the number one film recently in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules to talk about Sacrifice and the delayed Hidden 3D.
Jon: Tell us about Sacrifice and how did you get involved?
Devon Bostick: I’ve known [director] Damian [Lee] for many years now, and I’ve read the script through its many revisions. I was interested in this role, but it had completed changed by draft by draft. The character was older, had a daughter, and I came to Damian with the idea that the character could be younger, and the daughter could be his sister, who didn’t have any parents, but the involvement in the drug trade would be the same.
He really liked the idea, since Cuba Gooding’s character had the story where his family are killed and he’s trying to get the bad guy. So we switched it up and started shooting.
Jon: That’s the interesting part about the film and its characters, this duality amongst their arcs. It’s a dark movie, and you have this Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, so can you talk about going back to a more mature role like Sacrifice was?
Devon Bostick: It’s really fun for me, since I have a background in comedy. I did Second City in Toronto for a bit, as well as drama, where my most of work has been in like Adoration. So, I really do enjoy switching back and forth between comedy and drama, because I wouldn’t be able to do just one. It wouldn’t fulfill me enough. I actually shot Sacrifice first before Wimpy 2, so it’s great playing this character who’s really deep into the drug trade yet wants out, you know this dark guy, and then go right into the goofiness of Rodrick. It’s a lot of fun; I like to act, but I’m not going to do all goofy or drug trade movies (laughs).
It’s fun to switch it up. I’ve done a lot of dark movies that year, actually. Rodrick Rules ended my year on a light note.

Jon: You have a lot of diversity in your filmography as we have seen, but what gets you attracted to a script when it comes to you?
Devon Bostick: What gets me excited is, when a script is written by someone I know or if I’ve seen their work, who’s behind it, since you want to know who you’ll be working with. That’s a big part of it. I’m really looking for a good story, with a character who has a good arc. I look for comedy and drama, but I’ve done a few horror films as well. It’s corny, but I choose something that I would like to watch, something I would not regret being in. Where it gives me something to take away from as an actor, so those are the main traits I’m looking for.
Jon: Getting back to Sacrifice, how was it working along side Cuba Gooding, Jr.?
Devon Bostick: Working with Cuba was fun, even though I didn’t have too many scenes with him. Um, spoiler alert: The one scene I have with him, I’m dead. [end spoiler] (laughs) But we hung outside of set, he had a lot of ideas, really fun to be around. He’s a comedic guy, even though he’s really dark in this.
Jon: And of course, you had scenes with Christian Slater…

Devon Bostick: It was so awesome doing scenes with Christian Slater. He was the one I had the most scenes with, with exception of Arcadia Kendel. He’s so calm and wise, super light-hearted on set, but when we’re filming he’s into it. It was cool to see this guy who’s acted in some great movies messing around, but when the cameras rolled, it was all professionalism. It was a great set to be on, since it was really happy there, everyone wanted to be there and to make a good movie. It was a good process all around.
Jon: Can you give us an update on Hidden 3D?
Devon Bostick: I did it before Sacrifice . It’s a horror film where this group of people enter this rehabilitation center, where we’re there to help fix it up since the guy who inherited it wants to sell. As we are in there, dark, dark, things happen (laughs). It’s going to be wild to see. We shot it in Quebec, with crazy weather. The content of the film is crazy, where these creatures start killing us.

I think its been delayed because it was 3D, working out all of the kinks of the 3D world, as well as distribution. But I saw a trailer in Russian on Youtube, so apparently, they’re going to release it in Russia. I’m feeling it’ll come out later this year, early next. It takes a long time to get these Canadian films to come out. Not all Canadian support Canadian art. It’s tough sometimes, because in Canada people like to go see the popcorn movie first. It’ll come out and it’ll be entertaining.
