Thank you for reading my review for the Blu-Ray release of “Godzilla”(1998)
The Film
“He's not some monster trying to evade you. He's just an animal”
Short Version: “Godzilla” is your typical “Monster On The Loose” film. It has bad characters, cheesy dialogue, horrible acting, but it does have great special effects.
Plot Synopsis: After being mutated, a lizard travels to New York to lay eggs, and the military tries to stop it.
What I liked: The special effects in this movie are great. The scene on the bridge in which Godzilla was chasing the cab was great. I'll admit I do like the design of the monster. And the score was rather cheesy, but fit within the film.
What I disliked: The movie has no plot. Its just about a monster that comes to the city and the military tries to stop it. There are also a number of holes in the plot such as, If Godzilla could out run helicopters, but it couldn't out run a cab. Geez, the dialogue is worse than that of the dubbed Godzilla films. And the majority of the characters were just annoying. Seriously, I have to ask myself, Who is more annoying? Mary Jane in “Spider-man 3″ or Maria Pitillo in “Godzilla”? There were also a number of scenes that were ripped off from other films. For example, the baby Godzillas were obviously a rip off of the raptors from “Jurassic Park”. And lets not forget the ending where they kill the creature and finally feel sorry for it afterwards, just like in King Kong. The main problem I had with the was that the monster did nothing, but run away from the military. And even they cause more damage than the actual monster.
Favorite Scene: My favorite would have to be that amazing scene in which Godzilla is on the bridge. That scene alone looked just amazing.
The Blu-Ray
Audio/Video: The release comes with English, French, Portugese 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital. The video is presented in 1080p High Definition/2.40:1. The audio so freaking loud that its just nuts, and thats exactly how I like it. The video looks great as well, especially the scene in which Godzilla is on the bridge.
Behind the scenes of Godzilla with Charles Camain: I just look into the film, and where the Harry Shearer trys to make puns about Godzilla(And fails).
All Time Best of Godzilla Fight Scenes: Don't be fooled by this feature. Its nothing, but a preview for Sony's Godzilla titles.
The Ultimate Godzilla Multi-Player Trivia Game: Is game to show you just how much you paid attention during the movie. Odd that I got all them wrong.
Movie IQ: This is a feature that gives information about the cast, crew, music, and production of the film that plays during the movie.
Other features include a commentary by the visual effects crew, a music video for “Heroes” by the Wallflowers(Awesome song BTW), “2012″ Sneak Peak, and previews for some blu-ray titles.
I give the film a 2 out of 5
I give the Blu-Ray a 3 out of 5
Overall: This film is good as a “Monster On The Loose” film, but as a Godzilla film its just pure crap. I will admit I did have some fun watching this film, though. Its sad that this release wasn't given more quality. All of the special features(aside from the Blu-Ray exclusives) were on the “Monster Edition” release of the film. And even that release had more features to offer.
