Thank you for reading my review for “Gamera 3: Revenge Of Iris”.
“Every creature, however unappealing, fights to the last to survive. Humanity as well.” -Mayumi Nagamine.
Short Version: Not since “Gojira” have I seen a kaiju film this amazing.
Plot Synopsis: Set sometime after the Legion attacked, Gamera, now disconnected from humanity, continues his battle to protect the Earth from the now resurrected Gyaos. Meanwhile, a girl who blames Gamera for the death of her parents, awakens a “God” and uses it to seek revenge upon Gamera.
The story for this film is definitely its greatest aspect. Not once did I get bored, or loose interest. The only flaw that I can think of is that you have to watch the previous two films to understand whats going on, but those two are worth your time. There isn’t a whole lot of monster action in this film, but when you do get actions, its fucking amazing. Its probably some of the best action you will see in a kaiju film. Seriously, when Gamera fights the Gyaos in the middle of the city and the fight between Gamera and Iris in the Hurricane were epic. But, to me more action would have just took away from the story.
One of the many great aspects about the story is that its borderline a horror story. When you watch it you tend get more of a horror film vibe than that of a normal kaiju film.
The special effects for the film are incredible for its time. In fact, I have seen worse special effects in recent Hollywood films than in this movie. Hell, it took Toho 4 years to make a film that exceeds the VFX in this film. The monster props and suits are top notch. The only problem I have is the scales on the Gamera suit appear to be rather fake in some scenes, but its just a minor problem. The design for the adult Iris has to one of most original designs for a monster film.
The human characters are pretty interesting. One of the greatest scenes in the was when Ayana(the who hates Gamera) learns the truth, and now shes already in too deep. I love how they made Gamera the “enemy”, but at the same time hes the hero. Iris has to be one of the coolest kaiju in the entire genre. The writers did a great job making that monster a cold and vicious being. This is made clear when “he” shows Ayana the truth about what happened after “he” has already absorbed her into “his” nervous system.
The dialogue is just amazing, too bad is was dumbed down in the English dub.
Overall: There is no word in the Human language that can describe how great this film is. Okay, so the english dub does take some enjoyment away, but its still an amazing film none-the-less. I give “Gamera 3: Revenge Of Iris” a 5 out of 5.
