Zorro (1957-1958 Season 1) – DVD Review
If you take a look around Hollywood and in comics, we will all see a wide variety of masked superheroes by night and suave charming businessmen by day. However, there is always a first or an original to start something great. Zorro is definitely one of the first to create that combination if not the very first. In the late 1950’s Don Diego de la Vega (Guy Williams), dashed on the TV screen in the first Zorro series to charm the audience like never before, while this masked vigilante named Zorro made the authorities and enemies look foolish with his master swordsmanship.
I will admit that I am apart of the generation that is spoiled with technology. So it is natural that you would probably never find me watching a TV series in black and white. However, the restored and remastered series (thanks to Disney) is now something every generation can enjoy. The sound is crisp and the clear picture makes Guy Williams’ performance that much more awesome. His on screen charisma and charm is truly the highlight of the series. It is truly a series before its time with the steady balance of comedy, sword fights, and basic plots are flashes of brilliance that can truly be realized with the restored version. There is very few times that I will say that anything is perfect for the most part, but this will be the first.
Conclusion:
I believe that the restored Zorro will be a hit. Although it was so many generations ago, many different generations between then and now will enjoy the 18 plus hours of material just from Season 1.
