Weather Girl – Review

weather_girlBy thirty-five, most women hope to have all their life long dreams in the palm of their hand.  Weather Girl is the story of a woman who comes within reach of her goals just to have them ripped out from under her and all because of a man!

Sylvia (Tricia O’Kelley) has a notable job, the weather girl on a popular Seattle morning show, and the man of her dreams, the anchor of the show, Dale (Mark Harmon).  When she finds out Dale has been cheating on her with his co-anchor, she has a “psychotic episode” and describes a sex act on live TV.  In that moment, she digresses from a successful woman to a single, unemployed loser bumming off her little brother, Walt (Ryan Devlin) and waiting tables like in her college days.  Plus, the only guy who recognizes her for something other than being the “Sassy Weather Girl” is her brother’s best friend, Byron (Patrick J. Adams). Underpaid and six years her junior, he is definitely not her type!

Mark Harmon is almost unrecognizable as a sleazy, manipulative womanizer.  I much prefer him as the hero or moral center of a film where he seems natural and believable.  If you ask me, his jerky character is not his best.  Easily, my favorites in the movie, the best friend dynamic duo, Walt and Byron, are amiable yet annoying.  Devlin and Adams are adorable even when they are in Sylvia’s face telling her all the things she doesn’t want to hear.  They are the little brothers we all know and love, as well as the attractive boys across the hall with the devil-may-care charm.  They complement each other in every scene, but still shine as solo actors.  Their performances were engaging.

This movie is a classic chick flick.  When I say classic, I mean no surprises.  Five minutes in, I knew the ending; in fact, I knew the whole plot because it is also the plot of ten to twelve other movies I’ve seen in the last year alone.  It starts with the existential crisis that results in the bad breakup or job loss (in this case—both), continues with a journey to “finding yourself,” and ends with a happily ever after.

Overall, it was a movie I’d recommend simply to kill time.  It wasn’t a must-see, but it was enjoyable all the same.
