Walt Disney Animation Collection Volume 7: Mickey’s Christmas Carol – DVD Review
Disney animation is always impressive, but I don’t remember the last time a collection of holiday cartoons this awesome was released on DVD. Even better than the fact that this collection has finally been released is the retail price of $14.95! With a price-tag like that there is no reason any self respecting animation fan shouldn’t add this disc to their collection.
The first cartoon in the collection is of course Mickey’s Christmas Carol, a stunning, entertaining take on the Charles Dickens classic. Ebenezer Scrooge has always been one of my favorite Christmas characters. The miser that enjoys counting his money more than the company of people. His encounters with the ghosts of Christmas are perfectly cast with timeless Disney characters, and the animation itself is simply beautiful. The backgrounds are rendered with breathtaking precision and almost every Disney character that I can think of makes an appearance, with the exception of Pluto (unless I just missed him). This short film is one of the best Christmas cartoons ever made, so get off your keister and rent or buy this immediately.
The Small One is the next entry in the collection and it is my least favorite of the bunch. The animation is top notch, and the story is solid, but it’s just a tad slow for my taste. It’s the tale of a boy that saves his favorite donkey from being sold to the wrong person.
Pluto’s Christmas Tree is a solid Disney cartoon that features two of my favorite characters, Chip n’ Dale. The two chipmunks are trapped in a Christmas tree that Mickey and Pluto cut down and bring home. After decorating the tree, the mischievous chipmunks try to make their way out of the tree, causing Pluto to chase after them. I love this cartoon! It is an awesome Christmas story with a great cast of characters that deserves to be seen.
The final entry in the collection is Santa’s Workshop and it’s a lot of fun. We get to see Santa and his elves make tons of toys using some pretty amazing toy building techniques. I love this old school style of animation and the music is great as well.
This collection is worth every penny, and is definitely a killer film.
The DVD
Audio/Video
The audio sounded great on this disc, and while it doesn’t measure up to the new digitally created audio that modern films use, it does sound stellar when matched up with the awesome animation. The video transfer looks great in its 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The colors are vibrant and totally captivating.
Special Features
Nothing to speak of in this department except for the FastPlay option that allows the viewer to get straight to the flick without having to navigate through the main menu.
