The Butcher – DVD Review
Horror movies are some of the most difficult to make into a hit. There have not only been so many done, but there are few roads left for any new ideas to catch the fans. This movie des some different things, by actually taking the viewer into a slaughterhouse as four people are being tortured for seemingly no reason. It appears to be a real life torture for the hostages while the actual kidnappers are recording a movie of the beatings and eventual killings.
There are two routes usually taken when making this type of scary movie, both really extreme on the gore and not too scary or vice versa. However, in this case it lacked both. Not only was it not scary, but also I have seen worse gore on a number of movies. Now there were some disturbing scenes that make you cringe and feel possible sympathy for real life hostage victims who are tortured everyday. That is a plus, but that was definitely not the purpose of the movie. The only thing that made the movie relatively interesting was the twist of placing a camera on the hostage’s heads. It gave a first person view of being the hostage while they were being beaten and tortured. That is the only thing I can see stemming from this movie elsewhere. Besides that lonely fact I see no other purpose for the movie.
Conclusion: Leaving me very disturbed and not frightened. The only thing I can conclude from this movie is that it was not worth the time.

Totally agree with you Lawrence! I saw last year at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Fest….I did a similar review for it here! http://www.horror-movies.ca/horror_reviews_4574.htm
