Teen Wolf – Blu-ray Review
Teen Wolf is one of those flicks that appeals to nostalgia junkies (myself included), but will probably fall flat when it comes to younger audiences. It’s a movie that captures a moment in time that we don’t see in cinemas anymore; a b-grade picture that took the time to be more than just average.
The story is a simple one. Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox) is a teenager with problems. He’s not very good at sports, he doesn’t fare well with the ladies, and he happens to be a werewolf. Of course the werewolf side of the story is a simple metaphor for puberty, and at its heart Teen Wolf is a simple coming-of-age story. Once Scott realizes he has been afflicted with the family curse his life drastically changes. He is now great at sports, popular, and one of the hottest girls in school is interested in him. Only, his popularity comes at a price. He loses himself in the persona of the wolf and doesn’t see that the girl of his dreams was always there waiting for him in the background.
Overall Teen Wolf is pretty enjoyable. It hits the all the right notes, even if some of those notes are extremely predictable. Fox is convincing in his portrayal of the standard issue teen that finds popularity through unconventional means, and his performance is enhanced by his supporting actors. Jerry Levine is exceptional as Scott’s best friend Stiles, and Susan Ursitti is cute, and smart all rolled into one big ball of sexy as Boof. While James Hampton provides the voice of reason as Scott’s concerned dad.
If, like me, your looking for a trip down memory lane with an old favorite, or if your just in the mood for something fun, then Teen Wolf is sure to please. It is absolutely a killer film.
The Blu-ray:
Audio/Video: The video on this disc is nothing short of terrible. When I heard about this release on Blu-ray I thought I get a polished picture, but that just isn’t the case. The transfer is littered with artifacts and faded areas that make it seem as thought the film has been on a display shelf collecting dust and the cleaning crew took the year off.
As with the video the audio is pretty underwhelming as well. Don’t expect a 5.1 audio track as only the mono track is available on this disc. Basically the audio gets the job done and nothing more.

The only special feature to be found on here is a preview for the new Teen Wolf television series being produced by MTV (lame).
