Surrogates – Review
Science fiction is quickly becoming science fact in the fast paced world we live in. People spend an endless amount of hours in front of the computer screen living vicariously through gaming avatars and fake instant messaging profiles. Instead of talking to one another in person or even on the telephone, we communicate by typing out abbreviated text messages.
In Surrogates people have graduated from using computers to live out their fantasies, to living through the microchip driven eyes of robots. In this future people have given up on the outside world and live most of their lives plugged into chairs that allow them to control their surrogate robots. They don’t go out into the real world, they stay home while their robots take on their every day tasks for them, and never engage in real human contact. Then one day someone figures out how to render a surrogate inoperable while in turn killing its operator.
Bruce Willis plays Tom Greer, a FBI agent that is forced to venture out into the world after his surrogate is destroyed. He finds himself tightly woven into a plot that could drastically change the world he’s used to.
I enjoyed Surrogates. It clearly illustrated a possible future. While I don’t think our technology close to what it would take to bring us into the world imagined by the filmmakers of Surrogates. I do think that people would jump at the chance to be someone other than themselves, while never leaving the comfort of their home.
The flick was a solid science fiction movie with a little more action that it should have had. When the film relied on its intelligent story it was fascinating, but when it jumped headfirst into action sequences it lost some of its charm. It’s entertainment with a holes, but fun none-the-less. Even with it’s problems Surrogates was still a killer film.
