Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition – Blu-Ray Review
Even before my love of movies was fostered I was obsessed with cartoons. I would wake up early on Saturday mornings and watch all the cartoons I could squeeze in before regular programing took back the tube. So when VHS became a prominent fixture in my home, the parental units would rent any Disney animated feature they could get their hands on and I, in turn would watch them over and over again. One of my favorites of this bunch, and coincidentally Disney’s first ever animated feature, was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
I’m not going to waste time recapping the story here, because I’m pretty sure there aren’t many people out there that haven’t seen this awesome flick, but I am going to say that this is by far one of the most amazing blu-ray releases that I have ever had the pleasure of watching. The transfer is simply breathtaking and the audio is crystal clear, making this a perfect home theatre experience.
When I think about Disney animated films I don’t usually think about Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs, but after watching this set I feel guilty for not having ranked it up there with the best Disney has to offer. Hell, I feel guilty for not ranking it up there with the best animated films ever made. If your a film fan looking for a solid flick or a parent that wants to introduce your children to Disney, you can’t do better than picking up Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition. The amazing animation, storytelling, and packed extra features make this edition a must own killer film.
The Blu-Ray:
Audio/Video
The audio packed onto this disc is simply awesome! The 7.1 DTS audio is stellar, it sounded so good that at times it felt like I was watching an action movie. The video is quite beautiful as well and is offered up in two formats. The viewer can watch the flick in its original aspect ration or choose to watch it using Disney View, which replaces the black bars that are usually around the flick with painted ones that are supposed to enhance the viewing experience. I might be the minority but I found the Disney View feature to be distracting and slightly irritating, so check them both out and decide for yourself.
Special Features
Snow White Returns: This feature was quite a surprise because I had no idea that at one time there was talk of a Snow White sequel. That’s right, and not only was there talk, there was even story boards and preliminary animation hidden away in the Disney vault. The storyboards, and short animated clips are a treasure for fans of the film and Disney enthusiasts alike.
Hyperion Studios: Gives fans a chance to check out Walt’s original studio. Pretty darn cool!
The One That Started It All: This feature explores this groundbreaking film and the deep impact it made on the film industry.
Sneak Peak at The Princess And The Frog: This feature is pretty self explanatory. The filmmakers introduce the first few minutes of the film and talk a little about its history.
Family Play: This is a killer feature for kids. It allows the viewers to insert pictures of themselves into a music video! There are also games, puzzles, and other gems that are sure to entertain children. The Blu-Ray Live connection is necessary to take advantage of some of these features, but if you have children it’s worth it.
There’s also: Audio Commentary, Music Videos, Dopey’s Wild Mine Ride Game, “Heigh-Ho” Karaoke Sing-Along, Disney Through The Decades, and much, much more!
Also included in this edition is a DVD copy of the flick!
