Roger Corman’s Cult Classics Part 2: Angel in Red – DVD Review

“Once a hooker, always a hooker.” -Tina

The Flick:

Angel In Red (aka Uncaged) is a 1991 thriller. Directed by Lisa Hunt (as “William Duprey”) and the story was written by Joan Freeman Alden and Robert Alden. Screenplay written by Catherine Cyran. Starring Leslie Bega (Lost Highway), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen). Also starring Pamella D’Pella, Henry Brown, Jason Oliver, and Michael McDonald with supporting roles.

In a world filled with brutal sex and random violence, friendship and fantasies are all that keep five beautiful prostitutes going. One dreams of stardom, another of college. For teenage Mickie, selling her body is the only way she can support herself and her handicapped brother. But when their psychotic pimp, Sharkey, beats another pro to death, Mickie and her friends must band together to stop him before he kills them all.

Angel In Red starts off with all the hookers sitting in a living room watching a chick flick, it’s almost deceiving because it looks like a high school sleep over. They talk about their dreams of getting out of the street walking business. Even a whore can dream! Cut to the girls actually working with clients, nudity alert! There’s a small scene with Mickie paying her pimp, Sharkey and she seems to be happy with him. Then Sharkey pays a visit to Joey and interrupts her going at it with a john. He gets into a fight with the john, then smacks Joey around. Even though he’s not her pimp anymore. Sharkey demands respect and if he doesn’t get it he’ll have to make an example out of her. Meanwhile, Mickie stops home with some groceries for her handicapped brother, Robby. She quickly leaves again to make more money. Joey gets confronted by Sharkey again in the streets. He’s asks her for a payment and she comes up short. He knocks her hat off her head and finds her secret stash of money. Right before Joey gets a pimp slap to the mouth, again, some random street cop breaks up the fight. Joey runs home in hopes of packing her things and running away. Sharkey busts into the house and kicks her ass a few minutes before Mickie gets home. When Mickie finds out that Sharkey did this to Joey she attempts to take him on by herself. There’s a scuffle and he leaves. Mickie gets lost in the “pimp shuffle exchange program”. Sharkey and one of goons spend the rest of the movie looking for Mickie and Robby. Sharkey wants respect from everyone and if they stand in his way he’s going to kill them all. Who’s going to stop Sharkey now that he’s on a rampage?

Conclusion:

This was painful to watch. The acting, dialog, and music was lamesauce. I’m all about cult classics, but I feel this fell super short. Especially with Robby, played by Jason Oliver. He was handicapped because his father hit him in the head, apparently. In my opinion you couldn’t really tell the difference, except he talked at a slow pace, periodically. Not convincing, he didn’t commit to his character and I found it annoying. Although I love Jefferey Dean Morgan, Sharkey was not his best role. Psychotic looks good on him and he has super scrumptious hair. But it made me giggle because I could tell when he was going to toss his hair back, totally predictable. I’m happy that I got to see Leslie Bega’s titties, total bonus! She’s actually the only thing I really enjoyed in this film, besides Jefferey’s sexy hair. I also enjoyed Michael McDonald role as the clean cut john. But I got bored 20 mins in and this flick is about an hour and 20 mins long. And since when do pros live in one house, when they all have different pimps and it’s not a brothel or a whore house? Also, the hottie that is on the cover of the movie, isn’t in the film at all. Kind of deceiving, don’t you agree? So, my recommendation for this flick is this: Rent at your own risk! #JustSayin.

The DVD:

Audio/Visual

Visually, everything was really grainy. Sound quality was alright. The main title track “My Needs” was written and preformed by Gary and Robin Earl.

Special Features

Although this is a Roger Corman’s Cult Classic Double Feature, the only special feature on this DVD is a trailer of Angel In Red.
