Norm Macdonald: Me Doing Standup – DVD Review
You know what? I like Norm Macdonald.
His dead-pan delivery, his aww shucks routine, his demeanor. I like the slow burn of his jokes and I like how post-Saturday Night Live, he didn’t sellout like Adam Sandler has in recent years. But it wasn’t always the case with my liking of Norm. During his stint on SNL, especially his Weekend Update hosting duties, I hated him. Well, hate is a strong word, but you get my drift. He just didn’t excite me, and at that time (I was in my teen years), I skipped the segment until the skits came back. Like everything else, age changes things, and I’m sorry Norm, I like you now and I just had to catch up humor-wise with you as I got older. That’s why I like Norm Macdonald: he’s persistent and he goes down good…uh?
I don’t know anyone who has ever cried or got hurt laughing at a Norm Macdonald joke, and that’s still evident here in his Comedy Central special, Me Doing Standup. This hour-long standup special has everything that makes Norm, well Norm, and it’s funny. As typical for him, we get 60-minutes of his awkward, sometimes intelligent, sometimes odd humor, which covers all of the male typicals:Â sex, death, and more sex, but also some funky jabs at OJ Simpson, Tiger Woods, and gay pride. The oddity of how he sets up these jokes are great. While initially you’re like, “Oh no, don’t go there Norm!” He returns with the quirk that makes him special.
Of course, Me Doing Standup is lewd, but so? While not everything hits the funny bone, I won’t doubt that you’re going to be constantly smiling at him. He’s a polarizing comedian, and Me Doing Standup won’t change how people view him, but I like Norm. Again, he’s funny, odd, deadpan, a slow burn comedian for the guys and girls that like this type of stuff.
The DVD:
Audio/Video: The transfer and audio mix from Paramount Home Entertainment is just fine. Audio is clear, which that’s all it needs to be, and the picture is as good as SD can be on DVD.
Back to Norm: Here’s a pilot for a 2005 TV series that never came to fruition. Dark and ridiculous, I saw potential, but hey I like Norm. It’s a skit show with the Kids in the Hall.
Twelve Days of Christmas: This animated segment is an adaptation of a skit from his CD, Ridiculous. It’s pretty funny.
Norm’s Roast of Bob Saget: I’m not a big fan of roasts and Norm is in top form of odd here, stretching an anti-roast joke way to far.
