Mystery Science Theater 3000: XVII – DVD Review

The Film:

Since its debut in 1988, MST3K has emerged as one of the most highly regarded comedy series’. The show is based on Two mad scientists, Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu), and his sidekick Dr. Laurence Erhardt, (Josh Weinstein),who launch Joel Robinson (Hodgson), a janitor working for Gizmonic Institute, into space and force him to watch truly horrible B-movies. Along with him on the space station are two robots that he builds (Crow T. Robot, Gypsy, & Tom Servo). In order to keep their sanity, they provide comedic commentary for the awful movies that they must watch. Included in the 17th volume DVD are (four discs) four episodes: Blood Waters of Dr. Z, The Crawling Eye, The Beatniks, The Final Sacrifice.

Even though this series was not the first to base its plot on criticizing bad movies, it is one of the most successful. The movies that were selected on the 17th volume did their job of being films that are very hard to watch. However, it was very surprising that most of the criticisms I had of the movies showing they said before I could. With that said, the overall quality of the episodes was very good. The comedic sense of it is still timeless to me. I stayed interested despite the gruesomeness of the movies shown. Overall, I was pleased with what I saw.
