Killer Yacht Party (Troma) – DVD Review

The Film:

Just look at that DVD cover.

Wow. We at Killer Film really hate to judge a book by its cover so to speak, but damn that’s awful. Usually, even if the movie is a stinker, Troma Entertainment offers some fun, great, grindhouse-inspired cover art, but this completely sums up director Piotr Uzarowicz’s Killer Yacht Party (aka Dead in the Water): it sucks. It tries, but…

A slasher by any other name, is a instant-crowd pleasing idea, but when you feature only 20 minutes of anything interesting at the end, in terms of kills and story, Killer Yacht Party absolutely fizzles any cheesy attempt to feature some nice kills and nude hotties. I mean, they’re here but Uzarowics’ direction cops-out on the goods, possibly its only saving grace, but with cut aways from kills and some low-light scenes of boobs, horror fans really don’t have 85-minutes to spend on something called Killer Yacht Party.

The ghost of a murdered socialite could be haunting a yacht full of young adults who just want to argue, drink, dance, and have sex. Geez, stupid ghost. Featuring a ton of dance scenes, there’s little else to the film. Do we care about the characters? No. Do we get any sleazy thrills to keep it as a late night watch? No. Is there a point to shell out a few bucks for Killer Yacht Party? Let’s just say, paying your student loan is vastly more thrilling and chilling than this dead-brain, no budget snorefest.

The DVD:

Audio/Video: Troma Entertainment offers up a decent DVD for this film. Colors are good, blacks are okay. It’s shot-on-digital, so there’s some issues in night scenes, but that’s understandable. The audio is okay-ish, with a stereo only track provided. I had to turn up the volume way too high to hear some of the dialogue, but again, it’s shot-on-digital, so it’s understandable – I guess.

Commentary: Director Piotr Uzarowicz and writer Alex Silver chat it up in a lively track that covers what you’d expect from them on this movie. It’s more entertaining than the movie.

The rest of the extras are the typical Troma-features, like PSAs, Lloyd Kaufman intro, trailers, and a stills gallery.
