Kill Katie Malone – DVD Review

The Flick:

The person who cut together the trailer for Kill Katie Malone really deserves an award. This person actually made a bad film seem, not only worth watching, but damn good. When I watched the trailer before seeing this movie, I was really looking forward to viewing it. Boy, was I let down.

Two college roommates, Jim and “Dixie” along with their friend, Ginger (Stephen Colletti, Lil J and Masiela Lusha respectively), decide as a goof to bid on a ghost being sold on a on-line auction site. And, wouldn’t you know it? They win. When the package arrives it’s nothing more than a small antique box with a locket inside which contains a picture of a young woman. The seller claims that the ghost is an Irish servant girl who would do things for its new owner, or in this case owners. Ginger wishes for a single rose and “Dixie” wishes for money. Two harmless wishes. Both wishes come true, but the trio aren’t really convinced that the ghost is real. Not even after it does some low-level scares on its new owners for some unknown reason. What really convinces them is when the ghost enacts deadly revenge on anybody who may offend any of the friends, no matter how minor these perceived offenses turn out to be.

In time, the trio discover the ghost is one Katie Malone who was abused in life by her last owner. She also fiercely protects the family that she serves. The trio at one point had proclaimed themselves a “family,” and, this is how Katie views them. Not knowing a better thing to do to stop the killing, they decide to set her free of her servitude to them. This turns out a big mistake since they now become a target for Katie’s rage. I’m not sure if any of this makes much sense. But, that’s not this movie’s biggest problem.

There’s two things that killed this film for me. The main problems is the pacing. The film is so poorly paced that it turns out to be simply dull as dirt. A flick being boring is a huge sin to any audience member, I’m sure. I know it is for me. The other problem I had with it was the god awful digital effects. They did wake me up a bit so I could feel the icing on the cake of my disappointment. I’m sure director, Carlos Ramos Jr, didn’t intend for me, let alone any member of the audience to laugh when there’s an attack on one of the characters while running through a park. I just couldn’t help it. It looked so ridiculous.

At the end of the day, there’s not one thing about Kill Katie Malone that I could use to recommend it to anyone. Unless you have trouble sleeping. Stay away.

The DVD:

Audio/Video: The surround sound works well with the music, but not much else. The image quality is fair, at best.

Special Features: Wow! The trailer to Kill Katie Malone is it for extras. Since the trailer is better than the film itself, this could actually be viewed a special indeed.
