It’s Complicated – Review
Nancy Meyers and Meryl Streep team up to make what is a surprisingly hilarious film with It’s Complicated. Sharp and humorous dialogue and entertaining characters completely make up for seeing Alec Baldwin almost completely in the nude.
One of the things that tends to make or break a romantic comedy is the chemistry between the two leads which clearly is there. Baldwin and Streep mesh together perfectly along with the raunchy and clever dialogue that Meyers drenches you in. Granted, she’s not much of a director, but she can whip up one heck of an entertaining story. The acting all around the board is fine, clicking right away and just in different ways adding onto the hilarity or drama depending on what the scene is calling for.
Although the film is highly entertaining and simple as well, but does have its share of flaws. The main one that comes to mind is Steve Martin who acts better as a random statue throughout a majority of the film, even though he’s supposed to pose a ‘threat’ against Baldwin’s character. The thing that was the most irritating was the strange focusing and boring yet simple cinematography that was done by someone who practiced cinematography 101. I understand that romantic comedies are not taken too seriously when it comes to directing but in this case it plays in Nancy Meyers’ favor with the simple vision that is explained better on the big screen through the use of her fluid story. Although it hits a snag toward the end of the film with the dragged out resolution, it still holds up fairly well.
Meyers redeems herself with the atrocious film The Holiday and turns this latest creation into one of the raunchier, better put together and humorous pieces in her filmmaking library. The negative press that this feature has been getting is something I’m having a hard time grasping due to the comedy, chemistry and blast that this film is.

I know, I was actually dreading it but recommended it for my mom when we went to the movies the other day cause it looked right up her alley. Ending up being right up my alley as well, which I don’t mind.

Sorry, Melissa – this just proves that comedies are often too tough to recommend because of the subjectivity of any individual’s sense of humor. I would rather watch The Holiday 100 times before seeing this again. If you’ve got an Y chromosome (or really, even an X), I’d say your money was better spent on dirty needles. If it weren’t somewhat my responsibility to see these things, I’d have left this one 10 minutes in.
