Hobo With A Shotgun – Review

In 2007, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez decided to bring back the 1970′s with their homage to the glory days of cinema with their double feature, GRINDHOUSE. It feature a movie directed by each man, PLANET TERROR directed by Rodriguez and DEATH PROOF directed by Tarantino, with fake trailers before and between each movie. It didn’t do as well as some would have wanted at the box office, but it kick started a fad that was long overdue. Since then we’ve had an abundance amount of grindhouse type movies both in the theater and direct to DVD, culminating with Rodriguez’ hit MACHETE, which was one of the fake trailers seen before PLANET TERROR. There has been much talk about each of the other faux trailers being made into full length movies, but it was one that was made by a fan that became the next film. Tarantino and Rodriguez ran a contest to find the best fan-made faux trailer, and Jason Eisener and his friends took them up on the offer. What Eisener and crew created was HOBO WTIH A SHOTGUN. It won the contest and has since been made into a feature film.

A hobo (Rutger Hauer) makes his way to a new city but soon finds it’s not the perfect place he had hoped it to be. Crime is high, murder is rampant and the city is run by a twisted man who is untouchable, The Drake (Brian Downey). If you cross the man, he puts you in a manhole and rips off your head. He doesn’t care who you are, even his own brother. His sons, Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith) run around the city like it’s their own personal playground, they sell drugs, kill and beat people up. One day Hobo is looking in a pawn shop window and sees a lawn mower and decides that it’s time for a change. He wants to raise money to buy it and get out of the city. While he is making the purchase some roughians try to hold up the shop. Above the lawnmower, Hobo sees a shotgun and decides it’s time to clean up the city. He kills everyone that does wrong, but soon The Drake has had enough. He wants Hobo dead and orders the citizens of the city to kill all homeless people and bring him the head of Hobo. The city runs red with blood, but Hobo won’t give up his fight. Along with a prostitute he befriends, Abby (the super hot Molly Dunsworth), Hobo continues his mission. With Hobo running amuck, The Drake calls upon his ultimate weapons, The Plague, two robots (or maybe men in armor, we don’t know), to take care what the public couldn’t.

Along the way there is tons of blood being spilled. No one is safe, not even children. The dialogue is super cheesy, the gore is over the top and the acting is beyond silly. All those elements put together make one of the funnest experiences you can ever have. Magnet Releasing did a great job allowing Eisener and gang to make the movie they wanted. If you grew up watching the classic films that Troma used to release, like THE TOXIC AVENGER, CLASS OF NUKE ‘EM HIGH and SGT. KABUKIMAN, NYPD, then this will speak to you. Eisener and friends have made a movie that would make Lloyd Kaufman (president of Troma) blush. This is a full-on must see that you won’t regret paying for. Another thing to point out is the score from Darius Holbert and Russ Howard III. They did a great job bringing the sounds of the 80′s back from the dead. If you are easily offended, you still need to see this politically incorrect masterpiece. Also, keep a look out for one of the most ridiculous, yet amazingly funny, side stories about a bear you’ll ever see.

  1. I’ve loved Rutger Hauer since THE HITCHER and BLIND FURY.

  2. Just a point to be made..Magnet picked up Hobo after it was made, just before it went to Sundance. They obviously saw the potential sellability of the movie and are capitalizing on it. Jason and his crew deserve all the credit for the movie’s creative success.

Thank you for the correction, LH. I look forward to seeing what Jason does in the future. He certainly seems like he loves the genre, and I’m rooting for him.

  3. This regained my faith a little becouse most of the early reviews were pretty bad, cant wait to check it out myself.

  4. I dunno, I’ve yet to see a non-positive review of the film yet. Even those who hated the film, that’s a positive review in my book, because of the things they hated it for. Excessive violence? Cheesy f/x? Humor derived from violence? Yes, please. Can’t wait, only 30 more days.

  5. I don’t know if I agree with the statement that “Grindhouse” kicked off a fad. These films have continually been made, just nobody has paid attention to them. Troma has made a career off of them. “Hobo With A Shotgun ” is just another in a long line of low budget exploitation films. Don’t get me wrong though. I love this flick.
