FlashForward: The Complete Series – DVD Review

The Show:

It’s not often that a television series can be called Epic. Lost comes to mind and now ABC’s FlashForward. From the first frame I was hooked on the interesting premise, and dazzled by the extensive cast. Series creators David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Brannon Braga (24) have crafted a show that is grand in scope, and delivers on almost every level.

On October 6, 2009 every person on Earth loses consciousness for two minutes and seventeen seconds. This is the base of the entire FlashForward universe. During their time unconscious everyone experiences a visions of their futures on April 29, 2010. FBI agent Mark Benford’s (Joseph Fiennes) vision seems to be at the center of the event, and because of this fact he is tasked with heading up a team of agents to figure out who or what caused the event. Benford’s perspective on the events he saw in his vision help him and the FBI to collect a series of clues that lead to an unexpected prognosis.

Imagine if such an event were possible. Would you really want a look into your own future? These are the questions the show asks its audience, and unlike Lost, the show it gets compared to most, it provides the answers to the questions.

I was completely engulfed in the world FlashForward created and I loved every second of it. It’s a shame this series was canceled, because this show filled a void that needed to be filled. It successfully combined science fiction with good old fashion drama. If aren’t familiar with FlashForward, but enjoyed Lost or even if you didn’t enjoy Lost, do yourself a favor and buy or rent FlashForward as soon as you can, because it is absolutely a killer film.

The DVDs:

Audio/Video

The audio on this set is pretty impressive. The action sequences sounded amazing with the show’s 5.1 soundtrack. The video looked great as well. At times there was a little grain in the darker scenes, but it didn’t detract from the overall experience.

Special Features

Commentary: There is a commentary track featuring actor Dominic Monaghan and Producer Jessika Borsiczky. It is on Episode 11 and is informative, but weak as for as commentary tracks go.

Architects of Destiny: A pretty solid featurette that has the cast talking about the filming of the epic first episode and basically talking up the show.

On Set: Provides a look at the creation of a scene. I dug this feature, but didn’t care for the way it was broken up into segments.

Kangaroo: A short glimpse into why the kangaroo shows up.

There are a host of other features on this set as well and most of them are worth checking out. Overall it’s a solid release, and one that I’d love to check out on Blu-ray.

Donny Broussard

I enjoy the types of films that used to dominate late night television in the '80s, spending time with my family, filmmaking, photography, Rubik's Cubes, Diet Pepsi, building old Shogun Warriors model kits, Canon cameras, comic books, AOR, coconut ice cream, mac & cheese, cold pizza, popcorn, nachos, UL Football tailgating, film festivals, reading, Barry Manilow (don't ask), films with both Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase in them, Alf, Pac Man, 1979 Trans AMs, beer, Godzilla, Hooters (both the restaurant and ones girls like to keep hidden), and Bigfoot (he's real). I'm just saying.
