Fanboys – DVD Review

fanboysdvd1The Flick

I’m a huge Star Wars fan.  So when I heard about Fanboys I was totally excited to see it.  Finally someone had made a movie for the geeks, the film fans that are willing to do whatever it takes to support their favorite franchise.  I am definitely one of those geeks.  I wait in line without hesitation to check out my favorite movies, and it’s not at all uncommon for me to drop coin on memorabilia for said movies.  Like many other Star Wars aficionados I waited patiently for Fanboys to grace the silver screen with it’s awesome presence, but much to my dismay it never made its way to a theatre near me.  Thankfully though the DVD was released this week.

The flick is basically about a group of Star Wars nerds that decide to take a road trip to Skywalker Ranch in order to steel a print of Episode I before it’s released.  The reason they are in such a hurry to see the flick?  Linus (Christopher Marquette) is dying of cancer.  It’s that simple.  The group consisting of Linus, Eric (Sam Huntington), Windows (Jay Baruchel), Hutch (Dan Fogler) and Zoe (Kristen Bell), jump into Hutch’s pimped out Star Wars van and head for the promise land.

I know this movie is getting mixed reviews, but I really dug it.  This is a film made for real fanboys.  It is completely obvious that writer Ernest Cline is a real fan and not just a poser trying to cash in on the Star Wars phenomenon.  I found myself smiling a lot during this flick.  I loved that the jokes are pretty much all inside jokes that only real Star Wars fans are going to understand.  Also, seeing Kristen Bell in the slave girl costume is worth the price of the DVD (wow).

Why this flick didn’t get a huge wide release doesn’t make any sense to me.  The cast is populated by Judd Apatow regulars, it is totally faithful to the Star Wars geek culture, and Kristen Bell wears the slave girl costume.  Anyway, if your a Star Wars fan, then this flick is for you because it was positively a killer film.

The Disc

Deleted Scenes: I’m not a huge fan of deleted scenes because most of the time they didn’t belong in the movie, and are usually boring.  Unfortunately they aren’t really spectacular on this disc either.

Commentary: The cast and crew commentary on here is pretty darn good.  I usually don’t listen to the complete commentary track, but this one kept my interest.

Disturbances In The Force: This feature consists of seven webisodes that focus on the cast and crew, costumes, etc.

The Truth About Fanboys: Another neat feature that has the director and cast members talking about fandom.

The Star Wars Parallel: A look at the Star Wars references used in the flick.

4 Fanboys & 1 Fangirl: Interviews with the main cast and director.

The Choreography: A behind the scenes feature that focuses on the flick’s dance scene.
