Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side – Blu-ray Review

familyguybdThe Flick:

Before writing about the flick I have a confession to make. I had never watched a full episode of Family Guy before receiving this disc for review. My friends are constantly telling me how amazing the show is, but I’m always catching up on my Tivo backlog and never get around to checking it out. After watching Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side I now understand why all my friends are so addicted to the show. As soon as I’m done with this review I’m gonna navigate to Netflix and queue up all the Family Guy I can find.

If you’ve seen Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back you already know the plot of this Family Guy special. Peter decides to entertain his family during a blackout by telling them a Star Wars story. The rebels are on Hoth and Luke (Chris), Han (Peter), and Leia (Lois) are evacuating the frozen planet after the Empire’s latest attack. You can see where it goes from here. It’s essentially the story we all know and love, only interpreted in Peter’s words.

I didn’t think a cartoon could look as good as this one does on blu-ray. This is definitely a must own for all Family Guy fans and absolutely a killer film.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video

The audio sounded great on my surround sound system, and video is beautiful.

Special Features

Commentary: The commentary track on this disc is stellar. Producers Seth MacFarlane, Mark Hentemann and David Goodman, Writer Kirker Butler, Director Dom Polcino, and Actor Seth Green provide one of the funniest commentary tracks I’ve ever heard. Worth listening to from beginning to end.

Animatic Scene-to-Scene: Dom Polcino compares the original drawings and animatics with the finished animations. I enjoyed seeing the original drawings and Polcino is entertaining.

Table Read: Awesome! This is by far my favorite feature on this disc. Watching MacFarlane move back and forth between character voices is eye opening. The guy has talent, as do the other actors and crew that are packed into a room for this table read.

The Dark side of Poster Art: Poster artists joe Vaux and mick Cassidy give up the skinny on how they created the poster, and original Star Wars poster artist Roger Kastel makes an appearance as well.

Family Guy Fact-Ups: My least favorite feature on the disc, this feature offers up funny factoids for Family Guy fans.

Rounding out this release is a digital copy for all you iPhone fanatics.

The Flick: Rating: ★★★★☆

The Blu-ray: Rating: ★★★½☆
