Demonic Toys 2 – Review

demonictoys2I don’t get it, I just don’t get it. For the life of me I can’t understand the appeal of the drivel that is the Demonic Toys and Puppetmaster franchises. Charles “Rubber” Band and Full Moon have made millions of dollars off of fans who think these films are actually good. They look like they were shot at a 99 cent store, the production value is beyond pisspoor, and they all feel like everyone involved is in it for the almighty dollar. I know that making movies is a business, but for fuck’s sake, at least make a attempt to put some passion on the screen and act like you give a rat’s patute about your audience.

Dr. Lorca (Michael Citrini) travels the globe looking to obtain oddities to add to his precious collection. He and his wife arrive at an Romanian Castle in search of a legendary toy that turns out to have magical powers. His young wife is aware of its value, and along with her man candy (she’s a cheater), they both decide to do a switcheroo so they can make some dinero of the devilish imp. Litte do they know is he has already reawakened a Cabbage Patch Doll and and a Jack in the Box in hopes of boring everyone to death in craptacular cheap-o-vision.

Writer/Director William Butler, who has been acting in horror films for over twenty years, should of known better than putting together something that is not even Syfy Channel worthy. Maybe he was busy getting advice from Dario Argento on how not to direct (see Giallo when it comes out and you’ll understand) because he is MIA behind the camera. Margaret Cho sidekick Selene Luna shows up as a psychic and is unintentionally funny at every turn.

There is not a single positive thing I can say about Demonic Toys 2. The general public is lucky for writers like me whose job it is to sit through abominations from hacksters so you don’t have to. Clocking in at 80 minutes, this cinematic shit sandwich felt like it would never end. I’d rather pluck my eye out with a fork than to spend $4.99 for this VOD poop shoot again. It sounds like I’m being harsh huh? Damn right, I call ‘em like I see them.

  1. Jason! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch our little film. Keep up the good work I am a regular reader. It’s awesomely entertaining to read how angry and worked up you got over a 100k movie about possessed toys.

    Many Thanks
    William Butler

  2. I’m a fan of the PUPPET MASTER series. I have the boxset, and have seen them all, except PUPPET MASTER: LEGACY, including PUPPET MASTER VS DEMONIC TOYS. Truthy be told, the original isn’t horrible and part 3 is actually pretty good. Other than that, yeah the rest of the series isn’t very good.

  3. I wear my critical emotions on my sleeve and that shines through on every review I do, positive or negative. I write from the heart and I’m not one who likes to pander like so many other writers for webzines. They either won’t review a film in fear of not getting that follow-up interview or an invitation to the set of the next film that director works on.

PINOCCHIO’S REVENGE and DOLLS are perfect examples of prepesterous films about killer toys that were competently made and that were low in budget, but long in execution.

Dolls had a three million dollar budget and shot for two months -I know this because I worked on the film in Rome and PR had a 1.5 million dollar budget and shot for a month. Demonic Toys 2 had a 80k dollar budget and was shot in five days. You cant really compare the two. I absolutely respect your right to dislike the movie though. I hate many myself, so no bad feelings. We all did the project as a favor and with great love to Charles who kept me working through the 80′s.

As I said before – keep up the good work. I will be sure to spread the good word.

  4. I saw this movie on YouTube, a poor video, slanted, with bad sound. But I got most of it. I am a fan of the franchise, but in all honestly, this is the weakest one. I’m not saying it’s horrible, it got passed the low budget and everything, but it just doesn’t rank the entertainment vaule as the first two films, or even the bad yet likeable PUPPET MASTER VS DEMONIC TOYS. And to me, Frank Welker will always be the voice of Baby Oopsy-Daisy.

William Butler, if you read this, you’re awesome. Have lots of your movies, as an actor anyway. Also saw RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 5, which actually was pretty good. Not better than the first though, but very few sequels are.

I think being a critic is a hard job, you have to look at movies objectively. I review a LOT of children’s flicks and I know that even if I don’t dig them, that I’m not their intended audience. So in hindsight to be fair as a critic I have to look at a film from all angles. Jason is always honest when it comes to his feelings for movies, and I love him for that.

I had to see the flick that got zero stars so I tracked a copy down, and while I’m not sure I would have given it zero, I wouldn’t have given it more than one star. I’m a filmmaker as well and understand the hardships that come along with meager a budget, much less a 5 day shooting schedule (someone should give you a bad-ass of the year award for completing a movie, even a bad movie, in such a short time). William, the fact that your making movies is admirable. So keep up the struggle and keep churning out flicks until you make the one that takes you to the next level.

Thanks for checking out the site and know that we’ll keep checking out your flicks.

Anytime, Will. You’ve appeared in a lot of good films, and I’m also a fan of the Leatherface films. Years ago it took me forever to find a VHS of part 3, and when I did I once watched it four times in one day (cut version). I own the DVD now (uncut to the flesh). Well as you can see, I have no life. Keep up the good work, and tell Charlie the Chairman is not opposed to more DEMONIC TOYS films.

Just need to order DEMONIC TOYS 2 on DVD now. Amazon has it listed for the 26th.

  5. I just wanted to say to William Butler. I liked the film Demonic Toys 2. I personally thought it was very funny and entertaining. True the blood work on some scenes looked very fake. But I did not mind. It was great, and I personally would love a doll of Divoletto. He was just so cool how he was made and him talking and so forth made me laugh. A few question’s though.. like what exactly happens toward the end. The evil spirt was in Divoletto the entire time? And the demon takes away the lady possessing the psychic? As for the author of this review. Jason I would have to disagree.. this film is a oscar winner compared to that load of crap that Scifi made. Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys, what a sham that movie was. Fullmoon movies have been with me since my childhood. I have most and still love most to this day. Especially Puppet Master,Demonic Toys- and Subspecies. Other favorites Dark Angel,Crash and Burn and Lurking Fear. If you really did this film in 5 days. You are just simply amazing. I loved it and the acting was good as well. My friend and I watched this last night actually.. we had a Demonic Toys marathon. And they were both just as good. This movie pleased me and thanks again for making it.
I give it a 8.. fun movie full of laughs and very entertaining.

As for Dolls I have and own.. thats a great one.
Not seen Pinocchio’s Revenge- but want to.

Nice of you George Kent. Lucky for me many more people like the project than refer to it at a “cinematic shit sandwich” lol – one has to wonder what journalism school endorses that sort of verbage. Yes there was an evil spirit in Divoletto in fact it was one of Fiora’s personal demons.

Donny please tell me some of the films that you are written and directed I would love to check it out.

Keep up the good work guys I love your little site.

  6. William, I personally think Jason does a great job on the site. He’s honest and has his own style. I don’t want to be the editor that prohibits my writers from expressing themselves especially when it stirs up this much discussion. I’m not a full-time filmmaker and will probably never be one. I have a comfortable job that keeps me around film 24/7 and a site that I enjoy very much.

But I’d be happy to send you a few DVDs for you to tear apart.

Here are a few trailers sir, all but one is or will be available within the next few months so let me know what you want and you can write a guest post tearing me apart if you’d like.

“Little Houses,” I co-directed this one with Zach Broussard a really talented filmmaker.

“Based on Actual Events,” I directed this one for fun with no-budget.

“Red Hours,” was directed by John Fallon, but I was his DP and shot the entire flick. It’s about to hit DVD and when it does I’ll send you one.

Enjoy, give me a list and address and then the ball is in your court.

    Thanks for visiting Killer Film!

  7. I’ve heard so many bad reviews on this movie and I actually bought the dvd to see how bad it really was. When I watched this film, I was surprised to see how good the movie played out. The actors were not horrible, the dolls looked more nasty and demon like, the voices were decent and the story made sense. My favorite doll was Divoletto too and I thought he was the childish one and that he was very curious on the things that were happening around him as to laughing a lot with enthusiasm. Whoopsie daisy keeps on talking so much shit, he gets his head blown off again lol classic. Overall, I would say that William did a good job with this one and it should at least be respected as a decent Demonic Toys movies. Respect!

  8. Loved the movie, as do I all of William’s works. I just wish he payed a cameo in the movie and was killed by the toys XD not in a bad way, I just mean Butler is known for being killed off by many different horror icons :D
