Cougar Town: The Complete First Season – DVD Review
When I saw the promo spots for Cougar Town I decided to exercise my right to change the channel. There was no way I was going to watch a show centered around a forty year old MILF with a penchant for younger men. So when I got the Season One DVD in the mail I wasn’t particularly excited about parking in front of the boob-tube to watch it. Fortunately for me I had to watch it, because otherwise I would have missed out on one of my favorite new shows. Cougar Town is a well written, superbly acted, and poignantly funny reminder that getting older doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
The premise is a simple, yet extremely solid one. Jules Cobb (Courteney Cox) is a successful real-estate agent learning to adjust to her recent divorce. She’s sexy, smart, a great mother, and extremely neurotic (there had to be a negative in there somewhere). She’s surrounded by her friends and neighbors, who are just as neurotic as she is. There’s her redneck ex-husband Bobby (Brian Van Holt), her self centered best friend Ellie (Christa Miller) and her obsessive, yet insightful husband Andy (Ian Gomez), her other sex obsessed best friend Laurie (Busy Phillipps), and her gigoloesque neighbor Grayson (Dan Byrd). Along with her son Travis (Dan Byrd) this insane suburb posse serves up laughs with a side of sexy and a heaping serving of awesome for desert.
Scrubs producer Bill Lawrence definitely understands what it takes to make a comedy sitcom work. His style is evident here, but at times more targeted than on his previous endeavors. The cast is easy to relate to and the stories are relevant. It’s hard sometimes for me to come to terms with the fact that I’ll soon be turning forty and because of this I don’t tend to enjoy shows centered around older characters, but the humor in this excellently written sitcom connected with me on a level that most 30 minute time killers don’t. Also, Courteney Cox is smoking hot, which connects with me on every level.
Even if your not closing in on your forties do yourself a favor and pick up this set. Not because it’s the hot new trend, but because it truly is a killer film.

The audio came in loud and clear and the video looked stellar.
Special Features
Taming Cougar Town: A making of feature that dives into the creation of the show. Worth checking out.
Deleted Scenes: Standard issue deleted material, but there is material here worth watching.
Saber Tooth Tiger Town: This is a sketch from Jimmy Kimmel that wasn’t all that great and didn’t really have a ton to do with the show.
There is also a music video, and a a few more features that are worth your time.

I watched 2 or 3 episodes and I just couldn’t get into it. Does it get better as the season goes?
It does get better as it goes. I don’t know why, but I dug the dirty humor.
I love this show. It’s hilarious!
