Beavis and Butt-Head: Mike Judge’s Most Wanted – DVD Review
The Show: Back in the 1990s, when the M in MTV stood for music, they decided to do something a little different. A show called Liquid Television debuted. The show consisted of cartoon shorts. Some of these shorts became so popular that they would later warrant their own movie (Aeon Flux) and some were just forgotten about. One of these shorts would go on to become one of the most popular shows in the history of the channel. Frog Baseball introduced the world to two 14 year old slackers known as Beavis and Butt-Head. Between 1992 and 1997 MTv would air 218 episodes. The show was so popular that it spawned it’s own soundtrack, hosted by the duo, a movie, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America and countless merchandise.
After the show received much controversy due to Beavis’ love for fire and other things on the show that parents didn’t approve of, the show was cancelled. Over the years there has been a very vocal fan base that has wanted the show to return. This year, after 14 years away, the dynamic duo has made a return. In preparation for this return, MTV and Mike Judge (the creator of the show and voice of many of the characters) have decided to put out a special DVD. This DVD, Beavis and Butt-Head: Mike Judge’s Most Wanted, is a collection of 20 of Judge’s favorite episodes. There are some really fun episodes here, the highlight being the episode The Great Cornholio, which introduces the world to Beavis’ sugar induced alter ego, The Great Cornholio.
The main problem found with this disc is that each of the 20 episodes can already be found on the previously released sets of the Beavis and Butt-Head show, which consists of 3 volumes. If you already own this, then you don’t really need to pick this DVD up. The only reason to check this one out if that’s the case is for the extras, which are very, very cool. Also, if you are looking for the music videos that were a part of the show during its run, you’ll be sad to know that none of those videos are included.
The Extras:
“Taint of Greatness: The Journey of Beavis and Butt-Head” Featurette: This alone is worth the low price of the DVD. This is an interview with Mike Judge and various behind the scenes people who worked on the show over it’s 6 year, 8 season run. They talk about the history of the characters, including clips from the original panel of people that saw the pilot. so much great information about the show, and everyone comes off as so likable.
Uncut “Frog Baseball”: This was the short that started it all. It’s only a little over 2 minutes long, is very rough and the voices are different than what’s to come, especially Beavis. This is what made the duo famous on Liquid Television. It’s great to see the uncut version as it was meant to be seen.
Scenes from the new season: This is a cool feature, but if you’ve seen the new season, which has one more episode left as of this writing. Nothing too special here, but it’s a nifty extra to have.
Audio/Visual: The audio here is fine. Nothing to complain about. All the voices and sounds come in clearly enough. The picture is fine as well. Nothing to write home about, but that’s because of the look of the animation.
