American Loser – DVD Review

The Flick:

American Loser tells the true story of Jeff Nichols (Seann William Scott), a recovering alcoholic who seems to suffer from many mental disorders. He comes from money, but because of his inability, or unwillingness, to get himself straightened out, his life is a mess. Jeff’s mother and step-father don’t help since they’ll bail him out whenever he asks them to. Through attending many Alcoholics Anonymous meetings he meets up with and mentors Lenny (Jeff Garlin), his soon to be roommate. Also, Lynn (Gretchen Mol), a woman who is more or less a gold-digger due to her own insecurities. She’s engaged to a wealthy businessman. Jeff and Lynn become lovers and soon fall in love. Both Lynn and Lenny inspire Jeff to get himself together. But, it’s a hard road for Jeff.

The movie opens with Jeff on a comedy club stage. As he introduces himself the location quickly changes to an AA meeting. Jeff’s dream, and key to a better life, is to become a stand-up comic. He mostly just talks about it without doing it. In the meantime, he hones his comedy craft during his ‘sharing’ at the meetings. His life is messed up enough to make good comedy bits and he knows it. But, will he ever make the jump to the stage?

First time director, Tod Harrison Williams (who also wrote the script) more or less keeps the tone steady. But, at times the film seemed a little disjointed, much like Jeff’s mental state. I don’t think it’s a stylistic choice, though. And, it felt like it didn’t know if it wanted to be a romantic comedy or a story about a man with mental issues getting control over his life. I believe the latter wins the battle, but there’s still that confusion.

Having said that, I still liked this flick. Jeff’s trails through life are interesting and funny. The cast is charming and likable. This is one of the best things Seann William Scott has ever done. And, it show more of what he can do as an actor. Gretchen Mol is flawless. Jeff Garlin makes Lenny a friend everyone would want. This is just one big feel good movie.

The DVD:

Audio/Video: This has a good, but not remarkable picture quantity. There’s 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital Audio. I viewed the movie in 5.1 and it sounded just fine.

Special Features: There’s only something they call a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette, but it’s more of a Making of American Loser Featurette in my opinion. And, that makes it better.
