True Romance

The DVD of one of the great films of 2006, The Science of Sleep, has just been released. While not holding the greatest amount of extra features, the DVD should prove fun for fans of director Michel Gondry and the film.

The Science of Sleep is, without a doubt, the most personal Gondry work yet. If you loved Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind, it’s physically impossible to not be impressed by this movie. The film is the dream-filled story of Stephane’s (Gael Garcia Bernal) move to Paris from Mexico in order to start a new job.

Disappointed by the work, Stephane finds solace in his neighbor Stephanie, who is a rare creative match. The trip of the story is supported by some of the most creative sequences in stop-motion to date, not in size or expense, but in splendor.

The DVD is a godsend for those wondering one question: How’s they do that?

It’s about forty minutes long and takes viewers through the months of building and shooting that took place prior to principal photography. A huge plus is the cast and crew’s input on the ending of the film - a must see for any fan.

I can’t wait to see what Gondry touches next - including the upcoming Be Kind Rewind with Jack Black. Until then, buy this DVD and be inspired - by both the film and the extra features.
