Pretty funny balls here…

It’s weird to know that some people are capable of great comedy and then see it go down in a somewhat mediocre fashion. Robert Ben Garant directed this as well as wrote it with Thomas Lennon, both names shouldn’t exactly ring bells for you unless you’re a Reno 911 buff. However they represent a good chunk of funny that was The State in the early/mid 90’s. A sketch comedy show that still holds up, and is regarded in my eyes of some of the best sketch comedy ever.
What’s also weird is to see the other cast members from The State put out some amazing stuff like WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER and THE TEN. Even weirder is that Garant and Lennon CAN do great, as proven with RENO 911..yet even BALLS falls flat on it’s testicles.
We’ve got the former child star ping pong champ who falls a typical fate when his father is killed by Chinese Triad over a bet and he quits ping pong. (But he never quits DEF LEOPARD!) Nineteen years later he’s tapped by FBI to help put the man that offed his pops behind bars. Like I said, pretty typical.
Luckily there’s some pretty damn funny stuff laced in there, un-luckily though, it’s not in there as much as it should be.
Thomas Lennon’s performance was, as usual, top notch. I’ve been a fan of his for years, and he’s always been consistently funny. Dan Fogler could be funny, but I couldn’t tell if he was going for a yesterday’s bargain bin Jack Black. You know, the overweight loudmouth.
Walken is in top comedy form in this one, of course, it’s just too bad he didn’t have some better material to use.
This movie had a LOT of potential, and a LOT of talent..it’s just too bad it couldn’t be better. Of course Garant and Lennon did Lohan’s HERBIE movie…
Okay, to wrap it up here, the movie isn’t totally bad. It’s defiantly worth a watch, but I can’t toss a ‘buy’ your way. I’d rent it first, make sure it’s up your alley of comedy. Like I said, there’s a shit-ton of great talent and cameos in there..but they just seemed under used.
