“Witches Night” is a killer old school horror flick! I was hooked from the first frame to the last, flicks like this restore my faith in the horror genre. I get a lot of direct to DVD horror flicks and while most of them are nothing more than time wasters used to fill shelf space at Best Buy, every once in a while I find one that surprises me. “Witches Night” not only surprised me, it made it onto my Halloween watch list.

The premise is a simple one. Four guys decide to go awol on a wedding and take the groom with them. They drive into the middle of nowhere, pick up mass quantities of beer, and camp on a beautiful lake. Only once there they meet up with a group of super-hot babes that just so happen to be witches. Like I said, the story is nothing new, but the way it’s executed is a breath of fresh air. The characters are ALL likable, so likable in fact that I didn’t want to see any of them die. While the bad girls were quite forgettable but extremely hot. The only complaint I have is that there could have been a bit more nudity.

The cast was strong, the locations looked great, and the photography was way above par for a direct to DVD release. It is very apparent that the filmmakers love the horror genre, and being that this is writer/director Paul Traynor’s directorial debut he has proved himself a director to keep my eyes on. If your a horror fan, do yourself a favor and pick this one up because “Witches Night” is definitely a killer film.
