2:22 – The Short Film – DVD Review
The Film:
Not to be confused with the other film named 2:22, this brilliantly shot, edited, made short film from director Steven Shea is something to behold. Running eight minutes, the film covers enough ground to be fully engrossing and hypnotic; proves a great short can have more bite than good feature length movies. 2:22 is constantly throwing the audience off, which for its eight minutes, is as startling when it’s over as it was when it began.
Vickie wakes up thriving in pain and sweat, unknowingly experiencing something internal. After throwing up and stripping herself naked, she rethinks her night at the bar, a night of sex, drugs, the usual. Was she raped? Is she pregnant? Was she drugged? 2:22 offers us this, mixed with a pulse-pounding soundtrack and a fine, frank, gritty performance by Tara Lightfoot. The film is a technical marvel, which aids its ascension above the countless other short films vying for your attention. Sweeping camera movements, unique shots, all done in three days. 2:22 is so well done, by the crew, the actress, it’s more than a short film made for and by love, it’s a calling card. We’ll be covering Steven Shea and Tara Lightfoot soon in our news section for feature films.
The DVD:
Audio/Video: For a short film, the Abyssmal Entertainment release is quite good. The audio is in either Stereo or a superb 5.1 track, and the video is decent too. Too bad there isn’t an HD version avaible. That would’ve done wonders for the film.
Crank the Reds: This is a good making-of piece, running nearly 12 minutes that covers the origin of the film and its production through on-set footage and interviews.
Music Video: Acting as a prequel to the short, here’s Cryptidz’ “2:22″ from their upcoming album, that was directed by Shea, starring Tara Lightfoot.
The Crazy Neighbor Story: The crew has a funny, maybe dangerous story to tell about a neighbor that came over during the shoot.
Trailers for other Abyssmal Entertainment releases round out the extras.
