May Movie Preview

The anticipation has been building and finally, here it is: the start of the summer movie season for 2010! April showered us with some interesting appetizers, but May is the real deal. As always, Killer Film is here ready to be your guide this month for each release with Donny and Jon’s See it’s or Skip it’s. There’s little else to say, other than when you want to cool off from the budding hot summer days, Hollywood has plenty to offer.

(May 7th)

Iron Man 2

Jon: This is one of my personal must-sees this summer, and for three key reasons. 1) I think Mickey Rourke will be a show stealer as the villain; 2) Seeing what Marvel does to furthering the introduction of The Avengers; 3) With many of the main pieces back-Downey and Favreau, key new additions like Sam Rockwell, and the added ‘wow’ factor of seeing Iron Man destroy things at the IMAX, it’s a no-brainer to see one of Summer 2010′s key releases. See It

Donny: I can’t wait for this movie! Not much to say other than Downey is the man and Favreau got it right the first time, so lets see if they can keep it together for the second round. See It

Babies

Jon: Have you seen this trailer? Its got incredible buzz going for it, but so? I’m around my nephew and niece enough to see their evolution, so why would I want to see this? Skip It

Donny: I love children. I even have two of my own, and now that they poop without the need of a parent for clean up I’m smiling from ear to ear. I am not interested in seeing babies do what babies do, I’ve been there and done that. Skip it

(May 14th)

Robin Hood

Jon: To me, Ridley Scott makes huge, mainstream, Hollywood-pleasing films that are usually hit-after-hit. Gladiator with bow and arrows? Sign me up. Seriously! As much as I loved the classic 1938 Errol Flynn adventure masterpiece, it’s time to revisit the character from a historical perspective and who better than Scott? As long as there wasn’t studio interference that deeply hurt the theatrical cut of Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, seeing a bloody Russell Crowe trying to attempt a kill shot with his arrow, this looks amazing. See It.

Donny: I dig Russell Crow and I seriously dig Robin Hood, so I’m definitely gonna See it.

Letters to Juliet

Jon: Not to knock this rom-com, but it’s purely placed here from Summit to offer a counter-programming film for the women who do not want to be with their husbands or boyfriends for Robin Hood. It’s probably nothing too new or special, yet it should appeal to those it’s aiming its marketing after. Women-See It, Men-Skip It

Donny: I’m not really excited about this flick, but if I play my cards right and take my wife to see this I might get lucky. Yep, I’m totally gonna use this flick to butter up the wife. See It

(May 21st)

MacGruber

Jon: Before we saw the trailer, just hearing the idea of a feature from the SNL skits wasn’t too appealing. For one, the jokes got stale after the third or fourth time of seeing the character, and two, past SNL films weren’t good. Once the trailer was shown, I fully believe this could be the sleeper hit of the summer, a sort of Tropic Thunder type of humor and action. See It.

Donny: I’m really excited to see this flick. SNL at the very least makes fun flicks that have enormous re-watch value. See It

Shrek: The Final Chapter

Jon: With DreamWorks Animation’s recent successes in Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon, seeing another sequel to a limp franchise wasn’t what I wanted from them. The first Shrek was great, the second average, the third was an abdominal attempt, so knowing that a fourth was to be made, incited groans. It, however, looks way better than it should have, and the 3D looks stellar. Is it enough to be a success, probably, but will we actually like it is to be seen. Skip It. (P.S.: What’s with the sudden title change from Shrek Forever After to Shrek: The Final Chapter?)

Donny: I know that I’m gonna have to see this with my kids, but I really, really, really want to skip it.

(May 28th)

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Jon: Clearly, this is Disney’s attempt at finding another big, possible franchise much like their lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean once was…until the fourth comes out. It looks mildly enjoyable, but can we believe Jake Gyllenhaal as a Middle Easterner? Too much CGI? It looks like Assassin’s Creed in certain shots. Most likely it will be an average fun time, but this summer is stacked with all sorts of action films and something is going to under-perform. This is it. Skip It.

Donny: I love this game and I love the hottie on the poster. So, basically I’m gonna be there for this one. Unlike Jon I’m not going to over analyze this, cool game + hot girl = see it.

Sex and the City 2

Jon: To be fair, the most of us won’t see it, because we have either no desire, no knowledge of the series or previous movie, but expect it to be huge! I know past Killer Film Fan of the Month, Diana Lindoff will be expecting Serena Whitney’s review as will be our other female readers, so for them-enjoy. Us? Skip It.

Donny: I don’t care about this flick one bit, but girls seem to love it. I’m gonna see it because I’m guessing the theatre will be filled with hotties that think this movie is the be all end all of chick flicks, maybe I’ll learn something.

George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead

Jon: I know Serena disliked it (to put it mildly) when she saw it at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but she also didn’t like Diary of the Dead and I did. So, respecting her views, I’m still going to see another new Romero zombie film no matter what. This is set for a theatrical and a Video-On-Demand release, so everyone will be able to see this. See It, with reservations.

Donny: Romero’s last few flicks didn’t do it for me. I’m gonna skip it and wait for the rental.

Not a whole lot, but for the big stuff, it’s an awesome assault to kick start the summer months. With some documentary and indie releases here and there, keep it here to Killer Film for reviews of all the summer releases. What are you seeing this month? Feel free to comment below!

  1. I might actually be more excited for ‘Babies’ than I am for ‘Prince of Persia’. Not gonna lie.

    Jon Reply:

“Babies” is trending well due to good marketing by Focus. I’m just not on board-yet-with Prince of Persia.

  2. I can’t wait for Iron Man 2 this weekend.

  3. Have fun at “Survival of the Dead.” It’s a complete piece of shit. Serena was right. I sort of liked “Diary of the Dead” too. But that it light years better than “Survival.”

To be really honest, I’m not looking all that forward to any of these. Watching for “Harry Brown” with Michael Caine and “The Good, The Bad and The Weird” finally getting a screening. Catherine Keener in “Please Give” looks good too. But yes, I’m a blockbuster stick in the mud. Sorry. ;)

    Jon Reply:

That’s okay. “Harry Brown” looks great, as does “The Good, The Bad, and The Weird”. Sucks that what you said about “Survival” is being echoed.

  4. Suprisingly, MacGruber is the one I want to see the most.

    Jon Reply:

MacGruber looks insane. I’m so there.

  5. I’ll be there opening weekend for my bday for SATC2!!!

    Christina Reply:

I’m all over “Sex”…”and the City 2″ too.

  6. I’m with you Jason, MacGruber looks like it’s going to bring the funny. I really want to check out Iron Man 2 as well though.
