Killer Film’s Valentine’s Day Watch List

You’re either in love or are single, and despite whatever feelings you have on this romantic holiday, you’ll be watching a movie. What to watch? Whether you’re with that special someone or alone, Killer Film-in our infinite wisdom-share to you all watch we are watching this Valentine’s Day.

Love sucks in real life, but in the movies, love is a splendid thing.

Donny Broussard: Say Anything… (1989)

It doesn’t get much better than Cameron Crowe’s Say anything…. John Cusack is pitch perfect as slacker Lloyd Dobler, an everyman that has no idea what he wants to do with his life other than spend time with the woman he loves. Crowe is one of my favorite writers. He understands the lives of everyday people and hasn’t lost site of how difficult life can be for the youthful as well as the no-so-youthful. If all romantic comedies were this good the genre would be my favorite, so do yourself a favor and check out a real Valentine’s Day flick.

Jon Peters: The Fountain (2005)

If I ever wanted to know about the meaning and power of undying love, I will watch this. If I ever want to feel the sting of love and love lost, I will listen to Clint Mansell’s brilliant score. This film was vastly misunderstood at the time of its release, and while it is complex in its form, the overall idea of the film is simple: cherish her now. When Liz dies, Jackman is so devastated because he’s spent her final months so consumed in research to save her, he failed to understand those moments with her, something that is so easily missed in real life, The Fountain is a masterpiece of film and in telling about that grandiose theme of love.

Serena Whitney: Away we Go (2009)

Sam Mendes’ most recent film, Away we Go is definitely my number one Valentine’s Day pick for this year. The film starts with long-time couple Verona and Burt dealing with their unexpected pregnancy.  As the months go by, both Verona and Burt realize that they have not achieved what most people around them have achieved, (e.g. marriage, children, well-paying careers) and decide to fly across the country to visit relatives in hope of acquiring the stability they crave in their unfocused lives before the baby is born.  They soon come to realize that their relatives are not as stable as they once thought they were.

Away we Go is my Valentine’s Day pick this year because I think it is a story relatable to anybody who has felt truly lost in their twenties or thirties because of the pressures of living one’s life to society’s high standards.  Verona and Burt may not have an expensive car, home or proper heating for that matter, but what they have is true love. Their love story is not something out of a fairy tale, but it is definitely one that should be envied by the time the end credits come on.

Instead of catching barely memorable and overly predictable romantic comedies starring surgeons from Grey’s Anatomy this Valentine’s Day, couples should opt for Away we Go. If you’re looking for an honest and realistic depiction of love, this movie is for you.

Jason Bene: My Demon Lover (1987)

“Yo, Mallory!” And with those two words Scott Valentine cemented his place in Television history, and from that came a short-lived film career. He was in the dreadful anthology Deadtime Stories, as well as the lighthearted horror-comedy My Demon Lover. While the movie is nothing to write home about, it’s still a perfect date film for any guy looking to show his significant other the lighter side of the genre.

Scott stars as a homeless street musician who becomes a horny devil when he becomes aroused. He meets the woman of his dreams, but anytime things get hot and heavy, he breaks out in all his demonic glory.

For the dudes out there whose ladies don’t like the scary flicks, there is no need to worry because the is fluff horror with no blood splatter to speak of. There is plenty of cheesy 80′s music and a happy ending that will put a smile on her grill.

Melissa Molina: The Princess Bride (1987)

Whenever I hear the words “As you wish” uttered from another person, it always takes me right back to that sub-meaning of “I love you” from The Princess Bride. This is one movie that both genders can easily curl up together and watch. With it’s vast array of action, suspense, romance and comedy spread throughout the film, it caters to every other genre.

The film echoes the romantic notion of true love, bringing you through the failures and triumphs that come along the way to get that one special person, even if that means you have to climb up the Cliffs of Insanity. Of course it doesn’t hurt that you get the extremely attractive Cary Elwes and Chris Sarandon on screen too.

Krista Richmond: Rome Adventure (1962)

As a whimsical girly-girl, you might be expecting me say that my favorite romantic movie is something starring Audrey Hepburn. While it’s true that I adore Breakfast at Tiffany’s, my favorite romantic movie is actually Rome Adventure (not to be confused with Hepburn’s Roman Holiday). This 1962 film stars Troy Donahue and Suzanne Pleshette. Her Prudence Belle stands up for herself and resigns from her job. She then sails for Italy, where she meets Donahue’s Don Porter, an American student at an Italian university. And, of course, they fall madly, passionately and irrationally in love as they tour through Italy. Yes, it’s predictable, but most romantic movies are. Yes, it’s cheesy, but in the kind of way that leaves a smile on your face. So why do I love this movie? Because, like Prudence, I believe that when you kiss the one you’re meant to be with, you should hear wild bells ringing, not remote little tinkles.

  4. Donny, you have two choices. Buy it on VHS or get a bootleg of it. Sigh, it’s never been released on DVD.

  5. Another great one is ROXANNE with the great Steve Martin.

  6. How can I forget ‘Debbie Does Dallas’?!

  7. Even though I know were supposed to just pick one, an honorable mention in my head goes to Moulin Rouge. Gotta love those musicals and the crazy visual imagination of Baz Luhrmann

    Jon Reply:

I hated Moulin Rouge. The editing sucks.

  8. more than likely will treat myself to a second viewing of 500 days of Summer, or Braveheart. Princess Bride is a great choice btw.
And of course my guilty pleasure Moulin Rouge

  9. I’m going with Jason on this one. I am very much anti Vday so it is typically the one day a year I seek out a horror film. So Drag me to Hell is my Vday pick!!
