June Movie Preview
The Summer Movie Season is in high gear, and it’s not stopping anytime soon. Between vacations (Ha! In this economy?), cookouts, and splish-splashing in the pool, Killer Film knows you want to cool off at the movies, and here’s our June Movie Preview where we rundown what you must see or skip this month in a handy, quick guide, featuring Webmaster/Editor Donny Broussard and Senior Writer Jon Peters. Let’s get crackin’!
(June 3rd)
X-Men: First Class

The IMDb plot: “In 1963, Charles Xavier starts up a school and later a team, for humans with superhuman abilities. Among them is Erik Lensherr, his best friend… and future archenemy.”
3D Option? No.
Jon: After two disastrous X-Men movies, fans were pleading 20th Century Fox to just stop. Let Marvel get the rights back. Once the first trailer hit for First Class, those sediments picked up again, but that’s unfair. Matthew Vaughn is a great emerging director, the cast is uniformly excellent, and switching it back to Cold War America is a stroke of brilliance. Is it a prequel to the existing films or a reboot, I don’t know, but it looks X2: X-Men United good. See it.
Donny: I really dig Matthew Vaughn’s work. He cares about his characters and works to bring them to life in unconventional ways. I wasn’t looking forward to a new X-Men movie until I heard he was involved. Add the incredible cast he has assembled and this could be something really great. See it.
(June 10th)
Super 8

The IMDb plot: “After witnessing a mysterious train crash, a group of friends in the summer of 1979 begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town, and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon.”
3D Option? No.
Donny: J.J. Abrams hasn’t let me down yet. I love is visual style and his attention to detail. The trailer for this flick looked like a cross between E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It took me back to a time when movies were still magical and the entire film wasn’t poured onto the web weeks before the release date. This is the flick I’m looking forward to the most this summer. See it.
Jon: Do we really need someone else to make Steven Spielberg type of films? Well, if Spielberg won’t, then J.J. is a fine replacement. The fan boy in me really wishes he would have went straight into Star Trek 2, and all of these cryptic posters and trailers are a tad bit annoying, but you can’t hate on something original in the heart of the summer. See it.
(June 17th)
Green Lantern

The IMDb plot: “A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.”
3D Option? Yes.
Jon: This is a cause for celebration no matter the outcome, since it’s finally a DC Comics movie not named Batman or Superman. Costume aside, I really want to believe we have a Star Wars-type of franchise here, and there should be doubt to that. The FX looks great, the 3D should be fun, and the intergalactic activities look to be my personal selling point. I can confidently tell you, here’s this summer’s most loved/hated film. See it.
Donny: I’m a sucker for super hero movies. I love nothing more than watching a comic book come to life, but me I can’t understand why the filmmakers couldn’t just put the Green Lantern in a real suit. I’m growing tired of adding CGI elements to movies where they aren’t needed. My interest in this one fades a little every time I see a trailer or TV spot. I’m gonna see it, but it isn’t high on my list of summer movies.
(June 24th)
Bad Teacher

The IMDb plot: “A comedy centered around a foul-mouthed, junior high teacher who, after being dumped by her sugar daddy, begins to woo a colleague — a move that pits her against a well-loved teacher.”
3D Option? No.
Donny: This flick looks like a lot of fun. Cameron Diaz is sexy, Jason Segel is always entertaining, and Justin Timberlake is growing into a solid actor. Enough said. See it.
Jon: I had this 7th Grade Math teacher, Ms. Spencer, and boy was she hot. This movie kind of reminds me of that time being a young, adolescence boy yet it looks like a gender reversal of Role Models. I agree with Donny’s statement on the actors, so See it.
Cars 2

The IMDb plot: “Racing star Lightning McQueen teams up with his best friend Mater for an international adventure as they go up against the world’s fastest cars.”
3D Option? Yes.
Jon:It feels wrong and weird to say this, but I’m fully expecting this to be Pixar’s first real bomb. Amongst kids, Cars is a huge franchise, yet most recognize it as a rather ho-hum film, and what of a sequel? Or why is there a sequel? It’s going to make money, but will it continue Pixar’s winning ways? I expect it to finish last. Skip it.
Donny: I had no interest in the first one, and I have absolutely no interest in this one either. Skip it.
(June 29th)
Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Note: This title just recently switched to this date, after originally confirmed for July 1st.
The IMDb plot: “The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and learn its secrets, which could turn the tide in the Transformers’ final battle.”
3D Option? Yes.
Jon: Here’s a first: I’m actually excited for a Michael Bay film. No this isn’t Donny, it’s still good old Jon, but why you ask? I wasn’t really sold until a few weeks back when I saw the trailer in stunning 3D. Stunning. 3D. Bay has always had a way with action sequences, and this is going to be his epic orgy of destruction and the 3D looks to actually add to the mayhem. Still, that replacement girl Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is no Megan Fox, but that’s what the sound design is for: distraction. After stutter-stepping in the first few films, this is the one where Bay gets it right. See it.
Donny: I have always been a fan of fine cheese and Michael Bay knows how to deliver in that department. I’m disappointed that Megan Fox isn’t in the picture, but I’m always down to watch Bay blow s**t up. See it.
June Spotlight
Troll Hunter

The IMDb plot: “A group of students investigate a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.”
3D Option? No.
Donny: The trailer for this one looks interesting. Everyone that I know that has seen it seems to be impressed by it (as apparent with our two reviews here by Brad Reiter and here by that clown who will chime his two cents in below), and on the surface it looks like a pretty original idea. I’m gonna see it.
Jon: Feel free to re-read my review, as Donny has pointed out. It’s a neat concept, shaky execution. An American remake is forthcoming, but are we all tired of the Cloverfield type of shaky camera movies yet? This is, however, rather unique…see it.
Whoa! Donny and Jon agreed a lot this month on movies. So apparently June should be a kick-ass movie-going month, and as a friendly reminder, keep it here to Killer Film as we will have reviews for this films and more all month long!

- July Movie Preview | KillerFilm - [...] We already covered Transformers: Dark of the Moon in our June Movie Preview here, due to Paramount's last minute ...

Super 8, Green Lantern, and Transformers 3 for me. I’ll see X-men when it premires on HBO, so I don’t have to spend money on it.

If you see Transformers 3, which you probably will, see it in 3D. I saw the trailer in 3D last week and it was incredible.

Transformers 3 is the only film I do want to see in 3D.
X-MEN is getting rave reviews and being called the best X-MEN movie so far. I was already interested in it (one of only a couple comic book movies this year that even have my attention), but the reviews have me excited.
SUPER 8 is a must see for me. I’m not a JJ fan boy, but this one looks great.
BAD TEACHER looks ok. It’d be better with a hotter actress. Diaz looks too much like Billy the puppet from the SAW series for my liking. I love Segel, and Justin Timberlake is a great comedic actor. He’s got great timing. That might be enough to get me to see it on DVD, or something.
Other than that, nothing really jumps at me. GREEN LANTERN looks horrible, IMO. Too much CGI for my taste. Don’t care about CARS 2 and TRANSFORMERS 3 is well…a TRANSFORMERS movie, so it won’t be good.

I’m shocked at the early First Class reviews, which in turn like you, has gotten myself very excited. I’m hoping Cars 2 bombs so Pixar can go back to what they do best and should have continued to do: make original films. Sequels are a aprt of the Disneyverse, but it feels like DreamWorks idea. Looks bad, too.
Finally saw THOR and enjoyed it.
Most likely will checkout X-Men 1st Class this upcoming weekend.
Hope it will be better than Wolverine.
Not a fan of the Transformers franchise, but I must admit that 3D trailer made my jaw drop.
Super 8 has Kyle Chandler, nuff said!
No interest in Green Lantern or Captain America.
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and SUPER 8 for sure!
Still not sure about GREEN LANTERN…
