SOMEONE...MAKE THIS MOVIE!! Stephen King's "Duma Key"

Written on 3/4/08
In this second installment of SOMEONE...MAKE THIS MOVIE, I'm going to give you the lowdown on the new book by someone whose work we are all familiar with, Mr. Stephen King. Yes, there have been countless films based on his novels, some adaptations good, some not so good. The films shouldn't be a reflection of the man's ability to craft a great story, especially when he doesn't write the screenplays, but with that said sometimes King's books are hit-or-miss as well.

Seems that when King was younger he knocked them out of the park every time. But as he got older some of his writing just wasn't up to par. In my opinion, his ideas were always brilliant, but his execution (especially the endings of some of his later work) left a lot to be desired. I wanted the old King back. And luckily I think we got him back. His last few novels have felt like the King of ole, the King we all grew up with and loved. Perhaps it was his little run in with the van that damn near killed him that did it, but King is back and as good as he ever was. Which leads us to Duma Key.....

"Duma Key" tells the story of Edgar Freemantle, a successful Minnesota contractor, who just barely survives an accident that fractures his skull and takes his arm. He begins rehabilitation and makes great strides, but sometimes has a hard time thinking clearly and suffers from bouts of violent rage. Soon Edgar's marriage falls apart and he decides to move shop down to Florida, to a little island called Duma Key. To his astonishment, he becomes consumed with making art—first pencil sketches, then paintings—that soon earns him a devoted following. His newfound friendships with another local, Wireman, and Edgar's own personal assistant, Jack, help Edgar readjust to life. But soon Freemantle learns that his artwork has the power both to destroy life and to cure ailments, and the strange menace that haunts Duma Key begins to assert itself and torment those dear to him, including his beloved daughter.

The book is filled with several memorable characters and is amongst King's best work ever, and ladies and gentlemen, that is saying a lot. It is a mysterious, creepy, and imaginative ride right up to the last page. The book covers a lot of emotional territory - divorce, family, friendship, sacrifice, and passion. King has outdone himself yet again and proved that he is still the "KING" of horror fiction.

Someone, please.....for the love of God......MAKE THIS MOVIE!!
