Killer Film's Halloween Watch-List

Written on 26/10/07
If you celebrate Halloween correctly, you probably watch a ton of horror films throughout the month until it culminates into a Halloween night marathon of blood, guts, and babes. Well, we thought it would be nice to let the rest of you in on our personal favorite picks for our favorite time of year. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Jimmy:

Freaks – Tod Browning’s spooky, and his follow up to the classic Dracula with Bela Lugosi. There is no other movie like this, a Halloween must.

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown – I have been watching this my whole life, and it wouldn’t be Halloween without it.

The Nightmare before Christmas – A mixture of the macabre, a sing a long (with cleverly demented lyrics), and stop motion animation. This is good enough to last until the Christmas season.

Creepshow – A great tribute to the classic horror comics of the 1950’s by George Romero and Stephen King; great grisly fun.

Frankenstein – The 1931 classic starring Boris Karloff. I was Frankenstein for Halloween in the early years.

Sleepy Hollow – A modern classic by Tim Burton, you literally lose count of how many heads are chopped off.

The Wolf Man – Another classic from Universal back in the day, starring Lon Cheney Jr.

Shadow of the Vampire – The fictional story of Max Schreck on the set of Nosferatu back in the silent days; a very creepy movie starring Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich.

Young Frankenstein – Mel Brooks’ classic horror farce made with many of the original lab props from the original Frankenstein.

Return of the Living Dead – The best comic Zombie movie out there, pure mayhem.

Donny:

1. John Carpenter’s “Halloween” is always going to be at the top of my list. The faceless shape that is Michael Myers is clearly the best of the slasher killers. This flick scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, and I still watch it at least twice a year.

2. “Fright Night” is my favorite vampire film and in my opinion one of the best damn horror films ever made. It made vampires cool without watering them down. The main bloodsucker Jerry Dandrige played by Chris Sarandon is cool but brutal, and scary. This flick also has a killer cast that includes one of my favorite genre actors, Stephen Geoffreys as Evil Ed. No Halloween would be complete without this flick.

3. “Ghoulies 1&2” aren’t the best horror films, but I hold a soft spot for them, and can’t seem to get enough of the mischievous little creatures that populate this franchise.

4. “The Monster Squad” is not only a kick ass horror film, it’s a kick ass horror film that I can watch with my son. When this flick made it to DVD I sat down with my boy and watched this horror classic and when the credits rolled he had a huge smile on his face. He got a little scared a few times, but he stuck it out, making this film regular viewing for us on Halloween.

5. “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” is a guilty pleasure of mine. I love the goofy song, the creepy masks, and the fact that it has nothing to do with the other films in the franchise. Also, Tom Atkins rocks!

6. “An American Werewolf in London” is by far the best werewolf movie that I have ever seen. It perfectly blends horror and comedy resulting in an extremely dark and entertaining film that still holds up today.

7. “The Return of the Living Dead” is another flick that blends horror and comedy with great success. Linnea Quigley’s naked grave top dance and a killer soundtrack spell good times for any horror fan. This is another flick that I watch at least 2 to 3 times a year.

8. Stuart Gordon’s adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft classic “Re-Animator” is one a hell of a good time. It has lots of gooey gore, T&A, and Jeffrey Combs baby! This is the perfect flick to throw on at a Halloween party.

9. “Trick or Treat” is a super-cheesy film, but I fucking love it! Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons both make cameos in this and the soundtrack is awesome. Long live Sammi Curr!

10. Last but not least, Halloween wouldn’t be the same without “It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

Rodney:

The Shining- Just read my review for this film...

May- What a breath of fresh air this movie was for the horror genre. It didn't rely on gore and jumps, but atmosphere and genuine creepiness.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre- I'm not talking about the horrible remake that relies on the bad qualities I mentioned above. One of my all-time favorite horror movies.

Halloween- This doesn't really require any reason, does it?

The Blair Witch Project- I know this movie is pretty divided, but I will defend this film forever. The real terror comes not from what is seen or known, but from what is left up to the viewer's imagination. I know the things that go on in my head are much scarier than anything that movie could’ve come up with...

Friday the 13th- Horror classic. Besides, nothing beats getting to see Kevin Bacon receive a arrow through the throat.

Eraserhead- Just a genuinely disturbing movie. More of an experiment in lighting and sound than a film with a coherent plot. Great art-house movie in the same league as Begotten.

The Seventh Seal- The horror genre is one of the toughest genres to define. This film doesn't fit into the standard definition of a horror film, but some of the images in the movie are truly scary and legendary. Ingmar Bergman's finest work, in my opinion. This movie should be in every atheist's collection.

Child's Play- I know this movie isn't praised in the horror community, and I may get some flack for even including this film, but it scared the shit out of me when I was young. I saw it when I was 5 and didn't recover until I was 10. Seriously. I would take baths with the door open so I could make a quick getaway just in case Chucky jumped out of the hamper.

Ed Wood- Again, not a horror movie, but an incredibly entertaining biopic of the horror genre's best worst director.

Charlie Brown

Ok motherfuckers, wondering how you can have a stellar October/Canadian Thanksgiving/Halloween month Charlie Brown style?

1. Halloween 3 – Ok, you either love or hate this movie. I think it’s highly underrated and really, it IS my pumpkin-carving movie!

2. Halloween 1 – I sort of felt I HAD to include this movie, I mean, I love the original, and if I am not watching it on DVD SOMETIME in October then it’s on TV and I am watching it by default anyway…

3.Nightmare on Elm Street 3 – I don’t know WHY this reminds me of Halloween, it just does. It’s the best of the sequels, and has a real “fun” feel to it…for a Child Molesting Murderer movie…

4. Evil Dead – I saw a midnight screening of this years ago on Halloween (in Wisconsin), and ever since then, Halloween hasn’t been the same if I am not drinking stale beer and hanging out with Ash.

5. Night of the living Dead – The original (and the Savini remake) are both staples of ANY Halloween season. NOTLD is one of those movies that I just NEVER get bored of.

6.An American Werewolf in London – This was my Halloween movie when I was a kid, I thought it was a documentary until I was 30 years old…Wait…it’s not?

7. Danzig-The First Home Video – It sounds funny I know, and Danzig is KINDA funny, but “Twist o’ Cain” is THEE Halloween song. Fuck it, this year I am going as Danzig for Halloween.

8. Ghoulies 3 – This movie is just awesome. Lot’s of rubber ghoulies and plastic boobs. I diggit!

9. Friday the 13th part 6- This was the first F13th film I saw in an actual theater, well, the drive in…My whole fucking family piled in my mom’s Gremlin and caught this with some other shitty throwaway movie, but Jason slamming the girl from Can’t Buy My Love’s head through the motor home scared the shit out of me.

10. It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown! – What can I say? It’s my life story.

Andrew:

I didn’t realize we were doing only ten. That’s a little tough for me considering that I watch at least two movies a day and dozens during October. I’ll try my best, though. And yeah, these are in no particular order because fuck that, it’s impossible to rank these bad boys.

Night of the Demons: Undoubtedly my favorite horror film ever and my favorite horror film during October. That’s right folks; I prefer watching “Night of the Demons” to “Halloween” on Halloween night any time.

Halloween: John Carpenter’s “Halloween” is like THE movie for the season. I mean, it’s fucking titled “Halloween.” Even though I declared that “Night of the Demons” is my favorite Halloween horror film, this one is right up there with it. A true fucking classic.

Motel Hell: If you’ve never seen this movie then you aren’t born yet or do not exist to me. This has to be one of the best 80s horror films ever. It’s cheesy as shit, but where else will you get to see a crazed farmer donning a giant pig head and having a chainsaw battle? The closing line of this film is fucking genius.

Scarecrows: One of my favorite 80s horror films. Great gore, scary scarecrows. Also has the most awesome fucking face-stab ever in the history of film.

Shaun of the Dead: If you’re one of those people who actually didn’t like this movie or has yet to see it because you just don’t care, then I’m probably going to murder you in the near future. Hilarious, violent, touching, amazing. This movie is nothing short of brilliant.

Black Christmas: Okay, so it’s about Christmas, but whatever. Bob Clark’s 1974 masterpiece broke some major territory in the horror genre, inspiring films like “Halloween” and “When a Stranger Calls,” both of which were originally planned as sequels to the film. Great atmosphere. Genuinely creepy. Oh, that reminds me. Jimmy, I need my fucking “Black Christmas” back!

Ghoulies 2: The first one was good, the second was great. A movie featuring the old drunk guy from Killer Klowns as a magician and fucking Donny Jeffcoat playing the same little dipshit he played in “Night of the Demons.” Plus the fucking ghoulies high-five each other and everyone cheers. You won’t find cheese like that in the produce section, my loves.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: If you need me to tell you why this Tobe Hooper classic is on my list then you should kill yourself by jumping into a meat grinder. I call dibs on a thigh!

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: Originally my favorite movie of all time, this 80s classic never gets old. With a theme song by The Dickies and an actress who says “cocoons” really weird, it’s one of the most entertaining and invaluable horror films in my collection.

May: Lucky McKee’s indie horror “May” is a fucking masterpiece. I remember showing it to all of my friends during my Halloween movie marathon in 2003. Most of them bought it shortly after. The other ones I’m no longer friends with.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: One of my favorite films of all time. Beautiful, entertaining, funny, heartwarming, and everything a great movie should be. I carve pumpkins to this film every year and sing along with Jack Skellington and the rest of the gang.

Troll 2: The best/worst movie EVER. It’s perfect for watching with a bunch of friends having a good laugh over. A true classic in the genre which actually has no trolls in the film.

Night of the Demons 2: As if the original weren’t enough, the sequel kicks equally as much ass. Another wonderful Halloween film loaded with tits, blood, and ass kicking nuns.

Severance: Ever since I first saw this movie a year ago, I’ve watched it countless times. Great for any season, any occasion, any day. Stellar. Perfect. Brilliant.

Okay, so I went over ten. Sue me. My list is actually a lot longer than this, but for your own good, I’ll stop here.

Happy Halloween from Killer Film!!
