Best of 2007

It has been a great year for Killer FIlm and we are looking forward to 2008, but before we kick off the new year here is Killer FIlm’s Best of 2007.

Most Fun at the Movies

Hot Fuzz

This flick rocked the comedy and the gore! By far the most fun I’ve had at the movies in years.

Best Drama

No Country for Old Men

A truly phenomenal film that deserves to clean up at the Oscars.

Photobucket

Best Comedies

Super Bad & Knocked UP

Both of these comedies involved filmmaker Judd Apatow, and both of them kicked major ass as well. All hail the new king of comedy!

Best Horror

Murder Party

Horror films don’t get much better than this flick. The filmmakers brought fun back into a dying genre. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Photobucket

Best Art House

Inland Empire

It’s Lynch, do I need to say more?

Photobucket

Best Actor

Simon Pegg

The man deserves the keys to Hollywood, and with “Hot Fuzz” he showed the world that he can be an action hero as well as a comedy mastermind.

Photobucket

Best Actress

Laura Dern

Her performance in “Inland Empire” was nothing short of stunning.

Photobucket

Best Director

Edgar Wright

With two awesome flick behind him, Edgar Wright is becoming one of the best film directors working today. I hope he keeps his wits and continues to make films for us and not the Hollywood suits.

Actors we want to see more of in 2008!

John Fallon

What can I say, the man is not only a stand up guy, but he can act as well. Here’s to seeing more of Fallon in 2008!

Photobucket

Macon Blair

Macon totally stole the spotlight in “Murder Party” and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Walking hard or hardly walking?

I want to hug John C. Reilly. The man has some comedy chops and I love them.

Actually, you know what? I don’t want to hug John C. Reilly. I just want to hug his comedy chops.

Big ups to him for putting on another nice comedy performance in WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY. Unfortunately, I liked him better in Talladega Nights. Maybe because I hate Nascar and can stand country..who knows.
The first half of the movie was great, it had me consistently laughing and by the time I checked my watch an hour had passed. Tim Meadows gave my favorite performance of his since THE LADIES MAN (’You a bad mailman!’), and made for some of the best scenes in the movie.

I haven’t seen the movie I’m pretty sure this is spoofing. I think it was the Eddie Money story or something. Can’t really remember. Anyway, even though I haven’t seen WALK REAL FINE, I still got the jokes and they worked. The movie did a great job of hitting on all the goofiness that makes a music biopic fantastically bad (anyone remember Apatow alum Romany Malco in TOO LEGIT: THE MC HAMMER STORY? Exactly).

All in all it was highly enjoyable. I laughed and laughed, enjoyed and enjoyed, and I even saw a penis.

A penis really close up. In the movie.

It was awesome.

It has some very memorable scenes and great gags, but nothing that’ll be quoted over water coolers or high school lockers in between beatings or classes.
I don’t think this one is as re-watchable as 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, SUPERBAD, KNOCKED UP, or TALLADEGA NIGHTS..but it’s DEFIANTLY worth a theater or rental view.

Ace Is The Man!

‘Megaforce’ is by far the closest the movie world has ever gotten to a live action ‘G.I. Joe’ movie. About a rapid deployment defense team that is called by the government whenever there is trouble, ‘Megaforce’ puts the cheese in action cinema, and I savored every morsel.

Led by the super awesome spandex wearing Ace Hunter (Barry Bostwick) ‘Megaforce’ uses kick ass motorcycles, tanks, and other toys to rid the world of evil. When Ace is called to duke it out with his old friend Guerera (Henry Silva), ‘Megaforce’ faces their toughest challenge.

This flick is pure fun like only the 1980s can provide. The heros wear golden spandex, drive super weapons, drink, talk about the ladies, and live in their secret hideout. I wish Hollywood would still make movies like this instead of trying to throw so much plot into tent-pole movies. Bostwick is perfect as the Commander with feathered hair, and Silva is stupid awesome as Guerera as well, but nothing beats a flying motorcycle. It excites me that someone actually spent the money to make a movie like this one. It can’t be cheap to create an army with super weapons, and I commend the producers for spending the coin.

I’m going to keep this review short and sweet, just like ‘Megaforce.’ If you get the chance to catch this one on cable or can find a bootleg on Ebay I would suggest you check it out, because ‘Megaforce’ is a killer film!

Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
The Brits are starting to become my favorite film makers. This outing with Jason Statham looks fun as hell, and the fact that its based on true events makes me want to see it today.

I do believe the Wachowski brothers have succeeded in adapting one of the most famous anime titles to the big screen. The first trailer for “Speed Racer” gives a glimpse into a world of implausible race tracks, insane cars, and unbelievable scenery. Not once while watching this trailer did this film look campy. Its gonna be fun, period

It’s too bad she won’t live! But then again, who does?

In 1982 everything should have gone right for the film “Blade Runner”. Ridley Scott was coming off the success of “Alien”, and Harrison Ford was without a doubt the most bankable actor in all of Hollywood. The film was and unfortunately, still is a realistic portrayal of the future. It wasn’t shiny and clean, it was dark, dirty and depressing. Offworld colonization was the norm, and synthetic humanoid replicants were being used as the colonies slave force.

The production was a nightmare from the start. Financial backers walked away days before filming was set to begin. The actors had to deal with filming in simulated rain for nearly two months. And Harrison Ford was obligated to record voice overs that damaged the final product.

In addition to opening the same week as “E.T.”, this all hurt the film in its initial theatrical run. Film goers were expecting an action packed sci-fi film, and what they got was a philosophical journey in what it meant to be human. The film was more successful overseas, and had some critics praise its story. Others panned the slow buildup and out of place happy ending.

The film takes place in Los Angeles of 2019. Rick Deckard is a special type of police officer, one tasked only with “retiring” replicants found on Earth. Declared illegal on Earth because of a rebellion on an offworld colony, replicants are feared for their increased intelligence and strength. Deckard is called out of semi-retirement when four of the newest series replicants make it to our planet. Their leader Roy (Rutger Hauer) is seeking to extend their built in 4 year life span, a failsafe added to he and his companions series. The replicant characters never once commit a crime. An assault by the character of Leon was only done to protect himself from retirement. Roy isn’t out to rule the world, he just doesn’t want to die. Throughout the film we are constantly reminded that the good guys are out to kill those that simply want to live.

25 years later we are being treated to the fifth, and according to the director, final cut of the film. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and am glad to see that despite his opinions of the main character, the ending is left ambiguous. There is truly no happy ending for the characters, and we have to wonder, is Deckard a replicant, or not???

ANOTHER Dune Remake???

Ok, David Lynchs take on Dune looked great, but made no goddamn sense. The second try, courtesy of the Sci Fi Channel, followed the story great, but looked like shit. Now word has it that Peter Berg is gonna helm the third adaptation of the novel. Hope they feel this ones a charm.

From Arrow In The Head:

The David Lynch adaptation of DUNE is an acquired taste to say the least. Not a horrible film, but not a great one either, and Lynch knew this (that’s why he had his name pullled). With various of renditions of the Frank Herbert series of books, it looked grim for DUNE to continue it’s screen franchise.

Well it was confirmed today that THE KINGDOM director, Peter Berg has stepped into the directors chair to helm the remake of DUNE. Now normally I’d be complaining about remakes, but this is actually one I really want to see. Berg confirmed to MTV MOVIES BLOG that it plans for him to direct the film is “a done deal”, and describes his vision of the film to be “big big big”.

As any fan of the Frank Herbert classic knows, “Dune” received the big screen treatment once before in a divisive David Lynch film. Berg said that while he’s “a big fan of Lynch,” he believes “that interpretation has left the door wide open for a remake.”

Now I’m sort of psyched to see what a revival of DUNE can do. If you’re unfamiliar with the Herbert books or the film or the world of DUNE in general, the first movie was about:

Set in a distant future where life in the universe and space travel is dependent upon a spice found only on the planet Dune, this film tracks the rise of young Paul Atreides, son of good Duke Lito, from the time of his father’s betrayal and murder by a rival lord, Baron Harkonnen, to his discovery of the great secret behind the planet Dune and his own destiny, which is to free the planet and its denizens of the cruel rule of the Emperor.
