Will Raimi direct Oz prequel?

Since his departure from the Spider-Man franchise, director Sam Raimi’s next project has been in question. He was last reported to be developing a feature adaptation of the popular game World of Warcraft. But according to Vulture, he may be directing Oz the Great and Powerful, a prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz.

There is speculation that Sam Mendes and Adam Shankman are contenders for the job along with Guillermo Del Toro who’s rumored to direct the film. However, Raimi was officially offered the job this past Friday morning, but no word on if Raimi will accept the offer. Raimi was rumored to go straight into World of Warcraft after completion of Spider-Man 4, so he may take that path instead.

The project is being written by Mitchell Kapner. Joe Roth will be producing the film. Disney is hoping that principal photography will begin this year.
