Will Ghost Rider 2 move forward without Cage?

Nicolas Cage has said many times that he wants to make the sequel to Ghost Rider, but it seems that Columbia Pictures could be forced to move forward without him if he cannot commit. Vulture reports that if studio isn’t in production by this November, then the rights revert back to Marvel:

“How badly does Columbia need to get the motor running on its Ghost Rider sequel? So badly that if Nicolas Cage can’t commit to making it this year, they may have to make it without him. Insiders confirm to Vulture that Columbia is facing a ticking clock on the rights to the BBQ-skulled Marvel Comics character: Legally, if the studio isn’t in production on a sequel by November 14, 2010, the franchise automatically reverts to Marvel — which means the comic company’s new owner, Disney.”

Nicholas Cage has said before that he’s committed to the film, but Disney wants him to return for National Treasure 3, which could begin filming this fall. The most likely scenario if Cage cannot commit is that Columbia will just re-cast the role. I know many wouldn’t like that idea, but actors are replaced all the time, and in many cases works out for the best.
