Von Trier throws the challenge flag on Scorsese
Every other person is going absolutely crazy when it comes to remakes nowadays, and this time were throwing Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Lars von Trier into the mix. How, you might be wondering, in the hell can this be possible? The answer is quite simple, Lars von Trier and Martin Scorsese would team up together to remake Taxi Driver with Robert De Niro coming back in the starring role.
This is the part where I feel my fingers should start catching on fire with typing that bit of information right there. So, let’s leave it to Variety to further explain what exactly all of this entails.:
The idea behind the project is similar to the film “The Five Obstructions” that von Trier and Danish helmer Jorgen Leth made in 2003. In that film, von Trier challenged his colleague Leth to do a remake of his own 1967 film “The Perfect Human.” Von Trier gave Leth the task of remaking five times, each time with a different obstacle, such as making the film animated, given by von Trier.
In the new project, von Trier is to challenge Scorsese and De Niro to remake their 1976 classic “Taxi Driver.”
Although this has only been stated by Peter Aalbaeck Jensen, his business partner/executive producer, there’s already word of an official statement that should be rising up from the Berlin Film Festival fairly soon. This is the first time that word of this project has come up, so once this ‘statement’ is announced, we can have comfort or dissatisfaction knowing if this project is actually a go. At least, at this time, it would make a lot of sense too as to the sudden re-teaming of Scorsese and De Niro that we reported about earlier today.
