Verbinski talks hard ‘R’ Bioshock movie

Gore Verbinski has been pretty quite recently, but that changed when Rango‘s stills and trailer was released last week, his new CG animated film starring Johnny Depp. Now, Verbinski is talking about that long-pipedream of a film called BioShock, based on the popular video game.

We’re working trying to make it. The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It’s a really expensive R-rated movie. So we’re trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it’s true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R.”

Could BioShock be the video game movie that changes general audiences perception of the genre? Even though Prince of Persia banked, it wasn’t as well received as hoped. “I think BioShock’s a rare one because it’s actually a great story,” says Verbinski.

The project is being prepped at Universal currently. Will they allow a hard R big budgeted video game movie?
