Tom Cruise in talks for Top Gun 2
While Paramount is gearing up for Top Gun 2 (here) with Tony Scott attached to direct (here), it’s been a question of whether or not Tom Cruise would return for the sequel. He’s rumored to have been considering the idea of reprising his role as Maverick, but only if it’s for a cameo appearance and he doesn’t play a big part in the story. However, screenwriter Christopher MaQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, X-men Origins: Wolverine 2) mentioned his script calls for Maverick as the lead (here).
Tony Scott now reveals to Entertainment Weekly that Cruise is in talks to return for the film.  “We have been talking with Tom, definitely,” he said. Although, Cruise isn’t the star he used to be 24 years ago, and his most recent film, Knight and Day, wasn’t the hit the studio was expecting. But may be returning to one of the roles that made him a star will be just what Cruise needs. Of course, TOPGUN has changed since Maverick’s day, which will be an issue that Scott has mentioned to be touched upon in the sequel. There’s no word on when Top Gun 2 will go into production, and Scott has already mentioned that it won’t be his next film after Unstoppable.

Only thing i liked about Top Gun was the soundtrack.
So no thanks.
I don’t think the film needs a sequel but if they are going to go ahead with it, Cruise is a must.
