Time running out for Dune remake
It looks like production on Parmount Pictures remake of the cult classic Dune has hit a major problem. The film has been in development for years, and was seemingly moving forward when Pierre Morel (From Paris With Love) was attached to direct (here). However, Parmount is now facing the possibility of loosing the rights to Frank Herbert’s novel.
Deadline Hollywood reports that Parmount has been denied another extension, and the studio could lose those rights next Spring if production hasn’t begun. “We don’t want to extend an option and watch the studio take seven years,” Producer Richard P. Rubinstein said. A script for the film does exist written by Chase Palmer , and is said to be very good. It’s completely fine with Rubinstein if Parmount doesn’t move forward as they have a great script, and the popularity of the franchise could see other studios bidding for the rights. “This is on a short tether. It’s a major book franchise, you can’t walk into a store and not see a shelf full of Dune books,” he said.
Although, it’s too early to give up hope, and it’s certainly not the first time (or the last) we’ve heard a similar story (here) . Pierre Morel seems to no longer be attached to the film, but producers Kevin Misher and Richard P. Rubinstein are currently looking for his replacement. However, Parmount is nervous about spending a lot of money on the project despite the popularity of the novel.
