The Karate Kid kicks its way into first

It looks like all the publicity paid off for the Columbia Pictures film The Karate Kid as it high-kicked its way into first place in it’s opening weekend. The Harald Zwart directed film scooped up $56 Million, proving that if you’ve even got a familiar title from a film much beloved by the general public, they’ll want to watch it like crazy. However, things aren’t looking good for Joe Carnahan directed feature The A-Team. The eighties television show turned feature length film didn’t catch on too well, only making $26 Million on it’s first weekend. That’s still a long ways to go in order to make back the hefty $110 Million dollar budget back.

Shrek Forever After (or Shrek The Final Chapter) continues to make profitable waves with it’s overall domestic gross being $210 Million. Given the fact that there’s a heavy amount of inflation going on especially with 3D, it’s not really much of a surprise that it made that kind of money. Splice continues to quickly sink, only making $13 Million total. It proves once more that people sometimes can’t handle character driven genre pictures, particularly of the sci-fi kind. Check out the remainder of the top ten below from Box Office Mojo.:
