The Hobbit’s 3D will be RED and EPIC
Like almost every other blockbuster film set to be released in 2012, The Hobbit will also be coming in 3D. While that doesn’t set well with many who are fed up with format, it’s good to know the film will at least be shot in 3D rather than post-converted. Another good thing about it is that REDUSER.net reports that director Peter Jackson will be using the new RED EPIC cameras to make the film.
According to the press release, the camera has ”5K resolution, can shoot up to 120 frames per second and has a new HDRx™™ mode for the highest dynamic range of any digital cinema camera ever made. Taking everything they had learned from building their first camera, RED designed the EPIC from scratch and have produced a smaller, lighter camera that is an order of magnitude more powerful.” This will allow Jackson to avoid the draw-backs of shooting with normal 3D cameras, and help re-capture the rich visuals from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Jackson will be using no more than 30 cameras, and will be one of the first directors to ever use the new technology.
Filming is scheduled to begin next February.
