The Dark Knight Rises will NOT be shot completley in IMAX

For The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan has decided against shooting or post-converting the film in 3D (here), and that his film is best suited for IMAX instead. Nolan has already shot a few of the major action scenes in The Dark Knight in IMAX, and fans are now interested in seeing this film entirely in IMAX. Director of Photography Wally Pfister has already expressed interest in the idea (here), and technology seems to have improved that will allow that possibility.

A “trusted source” told Collider that Nolan is also interested in that idea too. “I’m hearing that Nolan will try and shoot The Dark Knight Rises totally in IMAX,” according to the source. This wasn’t a possibility with The Dark Knight as Pfister noted the size of the camera made it impossible. However, technology improves over time, and a new camera would allow to shoot the film completely in IMAX. “I’ve heard that IMAX has been quietly developing a smaller, less intrusive camera that will be able to handle dialogue scenes,” according to the source. Of course, it depends on whether or not the camera is finished in time to allow usage.

This would definitely be a step forward as Pfister has mentioned the old IMAX camera’s are very complex, and restrict it’s usage. Nolan’s decision to not release the film in 3D could have been somewhat influenced by this new camera as it certainly wouldn’t be 3D capable just yet. It’s still only a rumor right now, and given that Nolan likes to play things close to the chest, we won’t hear anything official unless it’s from him. Although, shooting at least portions of the film in IMAX is pretty much a guarantee.

Update: According to The Wrap, Wally Pfister revealed that only portions of the movie will be shot in IMAX.  “The Dark Knight Rises,” for IMAX — as they did for sporadic parts in “The Dark Knight.” But they won’t shoot the entire film for IMAX, he said, citing cost and the inability to capture sound as just two of the impediments.”
