Star Trek 2 will be Khan-less
J.J. Abrams Star Trek was one of the biggest sci-fi films of last year, and brought the somewhat dead Star Trek franchise back. Since talk about a sequel began, it’s been speculated that Khan would be introduced as the film’s villain. After all, if the character is one, if not the most famous villain of the entire franchise.
An insider tells Badass Digest that the story has been decided, and that Khan will NOT be the villain in the movie. Also, a classic character from the first season will be the focus of the story. It doesn’t tell us much of anything, but the article does state the character appeared in the original Trek series. The source also gave a list of names that fans can speculate on. “It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named”, the source said.
Not going with Khan is definitely a good move on the writer’s part. Abrams film established a new timeline within the Star Trek universe, and the sequel should continue that and not reuse old villains for the sake of pleasing the fans. Also, one of the reasons Khan was such a great villain in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan was because he was already set-up in the television series prior to the film. Production is looking to begin next summer.
Star Trek 2 is scheduled to open in July of 2012.

What they did with Star Trek opens up so many doors, they can create new characters and keep it all fresh instead of bringing in established villains. If they flub it up, the fans will make so much noise about it.
I’m glad it’ll be Khan-less. I love Wrath of Khan but I want something original from this potentially great new series.
